Reporting to the Assistant Director-Cataloging and Metadata Department, 
the Metadata Services and Original Cataloging Coordinator will expand 
the scope of original cataloging and resource description at Penn while 
serving as a member of the CatMet management team.We are seeking a 
highly-motivated, innovative, and collaborative individual to lead a 
team of four accomplished original cataloging librarians and one 
paraprofessional.Members of Original Cataloging contribute authority and 
bibliographic records to the Library of Congress’ Program for 
Cooperative Cataloging (BIBCO, NACO, SACO); participate in LC’s 
Electronic Cataloging-in-Publication (ECIP) Program, creating 
pre-publication bibliographic records for University of Pennsylvania 
Press titles; and, analyze and map metadata for MESA (Medieval 
Electronic Scholarly Alliance).Within the Information Processing Center, 
the CatMet Department provides bibliographic control and access to the 
Libraries’ collections in a variety of formats and languages.In addition 
to participating in strategic and operational planning for the 
Department, the incumbent will fully integrate metadata services beyond 
traditional cataloging into the unit.The successful candidate will 
advocate for and promote future new services while motivating staff and 
ensuring timely discoverability of the Libraries’ physical and digital 
resources.

*.* Manage the Original Cataloging unit; mentor, train, and assess the 
effectiveness of staff.Engage the unit in continual process improvement, 
goal-setting, and professional growth.

. Develop and implement unit policies and procedures in keeping with 
national standards.Design workflows and administer unit projects.

. Create a program for and lead the unit in providing metadata 
consulting, data management, and project analysis services that support 
the needs of the Penn user communities.Seek out opportunities to provide 
expertise and communicate the value of cataloging and metadata standards.

. Participate in the management of the Cataloging & Metadata 
Department.Collaborate with colleagues in the IPC, areas studies and 
special collections technical services units, and other departments 
throughout the Libraries to ensure the unit is meeting the needs of its 
clientele.//

. Participate in digital library initiatives.Assist with the development 
of local metadata best practices, policies, and controlled vocabularies 
needed for the development of digital content projects.

. Create and manage metadata for digital collections.Perform original 
and complex adaptive cataloging.Lead and/or participate in authority

. Master’s degree from an ALA-accredited program and three years of 
metadata/cataloging-related experience in an academic library or the 
equivalent in education and experience are required.Five years of 
experience preferred.

national cataloging standards, principles, and identifier schemas (e.g., 
RDA, FRBR, AACR2, LCSH, NACO, SACO, LC Classification, MARC 21 formats, 
VIAF, ORCID, ISNI).

. Familiarity with library linked data standards and applications (e.g., 
RDF, BIBFRAME).

. Working knowledge of metadata processing, batch-loading, and 
transformation tools such as MarcEdit, Oxygen XML Editor, OpenRefine, XSLT.

. Working knowledge of bibliographic utilities, integrated library 
systems, and cataloging tools (e.g., RDA Toolkit, Cataloger’s Desktop, 
Classification Web).
