[Heb-NACO] relationship designator for posek?

Dear Heidi, Aaron K., and All,

The scenario that Ela is describing is not really a commentary on a person’s particular work and arguably does not merit a subject heading. Rather, the posek has influenced the writing of the author to such a degree that the posek is featured prominently on the title page.

Thanks,
Aaron T.

Historically I believe that catalogers have usually treated posḳim as creators [author or compiler?]. If we follow that practice then it seems that the resource being cataloged could be treated as a commentary on the legal adjudications of the poseḳ.

In this case we can use a formal relationship designator such as found in RDA J.2.1 in a MARC21 700 field such as "Based on (work):[author].|t[preferred title]" or M.2.2 "Commentary on (work): [author]. [preferred title]"

I am eager to hear thoughts from other members of our cataloging community.

Thanks, Heidi

Subject: [Heb-NACO] relationship designator for posek?

Hello All,

On numerous rabbinic books, it is stated explicity (and prominently) that the work is based on the pesak/writings (title often unspecified) of a particular posek. But so far, there is no relationship designator available. I found on Wikipedia two concise descriptions: “Jewish law arbiter” and “Jewish law adjudicator.”

We’ve discussed this issue in the Israel and Judaica section here at LC. The question is not only which term is better but also should we be giving access to the posek without the title of the specific work he authored. Would having such a relationship designator be helpful? Thank you in advance for your feedback.
