Dear Shoshanah,

I checked the NAR for Daniyel Tevito (no2009142261).  In that case, the 670 states “voc.” so presumably there was explicit vocalization of the Hebrew that directed the cataloger to establish the heading that way.  If the cataloger knows of the “correct” Latin alphabet form and there is no vocalization provided in the text, then the cataloger can romanize with that knowledge in mind.  Admittedly, this isn’t always easy since there has to be some adherence to the found Hebrew and the Hebrew rarely neatly approximates the Latin form.  But the cataloger always has flexibility.

In the case that Neil cites, I would go with Shuekah (dot under the kuf).

Your question reminded me of another instance when the transcription doesn’t make sense – see authority record 8232817 for Daniyel Tevito or ARN 5925102 for Mosheh P. Tu’itu (better than Tevito) .  Daniel Touitou is known in France and no one would consider his name to be Tevito or Tvito where Touitou is a very common Sephardic name.  Because of our Hebrew cataloging rules he was established as Tevito (!!!) and Mosheh Touitou was established as Tuitu.

Hi all,

I am having problems transcribing a 245. It’s about R. Aharon Choueka (1897-1978). In Hebrew it is written שויקה. The common pronunciation of the name has always been Shoo-eh-kah, and therefore the vav and the yud are matres lectionis, not semi-consonants in any way. Yet I am finding bibs with transcriptions like Shuyekah, which probably are correct according to the rule, but make no sense scientifically speaking, not to mention the fact that they are of no use to most patrons.

Your thoughts? Can common sense and known pronunciation bend the rules?

Of course, I also found records with Shavikah, Shvikah, and Shvekah, but those are just mistakes.
