Thank you for the explanation. It does make sense from an authoritative point of view. Quite honestly, as a linguist it is unlikely I would have taken this solution, which in my opinion it doesn’t help the user at all. However, it is not my call.

In the interest of standardizing the romanization of Hebrew words in RDA cataloging, we rely on a couple of authoritative dictionaries.  Specifically, when a word of foreign derivation begins with a consonant plus sheva, following by another vocalized consonant, we consult Alcalay's Milon ʽIvri-Angli shalem (Tel-Aviv : Masadah, 1964). This dictionary usually omits the sheva character in such words if it is not pronounced.  When, for whatever reason, it includes this sheva character, we romanize it as "e," regardless of the pronunciation, so that all catalogers will romanize it similarly.

I am really curious about why deramah appears as an exception to the sheva in foreign loan words rule. The source (draftHMC p. 20) only cites Alcalay, but I see no explanation there, other than the word has a circellus, which only means it’s a borrowed word.

Has anybody ever pronounced deh-rah-mah? Does the same rule apply to דרמטורג, דרמטורגיה?

Like in the case of deruzi / דרוזי, I can’t see a reason for this exception. Maybe somebody can explain.
