Dear Mrs. Whitacre,
Thanks for your presentation and Q&A for the Hebrew catalogers at ALA. I wasn't able to be there but I read through your PowerPoint. Since I was the person who generated this particular question, I'd like to give you some further information on the issue. Here's a citation of your own PP slide:
* Concern about right to left strings in Connexion needing polishing, especially when a field has mixed alphabets: "Under RDA, whenever I add a parallel English title inside a Hebrew 245 the result looks awful, although sometimes it prints ok."
- OCLC does not have current plans to enhance Connexion further. We would love to see examples of problematic records. We will make sure these work correctly in Record Manager as we continue development of that interface. Please send sample record numbers to me!
-
It is not easy to give you examples, as this happens in ways a little unpredictable, and as sometimes the problem can be seen on the screen but it prints better than expected. Let's take record #19138033. I'll focus on fields 245 and 264, the Hebrew script version.
This is how it displays on screen

Please open attachment to see how it actually prints, and compare both.
Note the order of the fields, equal signs, subfield marker and slash. Here's the process (of course I am always reading right to left):
Order in which I type: [Hebrew title] = $b [English parallel title] / $c [Hebrew author name]
What comes out on screen after validation: [Hebrew title] = / $c [English parallel title] $b [Hebrew author name]
What it actually prints: [Hebrew author name] $c / [English parallel title] $b = [Hebrew title]
In the case of 264 (Hebrew script only) this is what I get:
Order in which I type: [Hebrew city] : $b [Hebrew publisher], $c [Hebrew date] = [English date] [period]
What comes out on screen after validation: [Hebrew city] : $b [Hebrew publisher], [English date] = [Hebrew date] $c [period]
What it actually prints: [period] [English date] = [Hebrew date] $c , [Hebrew publisher] $b : [Hebrew city]
Hope this helps. If you need more details or want to watch the issue while it happens, I could connect on Webmeeting and share my screen.
Again, many thanks for your help, and best regards,
