[Heb-NACO] Danacode

This is not a RDA or authority issue but I hope it will interest this list.

The National Library of Israel and the Israeli Inter-University Cataloging Committee is happy to announce that our request to the Library of Congress for a new "Other Standard Identifier", the danacode (tag 024) was approved. The code will hopefully be assigned by LC in the very near future.

Background:
Many Israeli commercial publishers do not request ISBN numbers.  They request a danacode number. The danacode is similar to an ISBN number. It is printed on the back cover of Hebrew books and occasionally on publications in other languages published in Israel.  In the following example, the danacode is displayed as a text and as a barcode.  The danacode consists of a publisher code (up to 4 digits), a hyphen and an internal book number (up to 7 digits). In the example below, 800 is the publisher's number and 3411 is the book number. The number is also displayed as a barcode. Sometimes it is displayed according to the UPC-A standard (12 digits) and sometimes according to EAN-13 standard (13 digits).

The number is assigned by D.A.N.A. Systems,  Ltd.    http://www.danacode.co.il/news.aspx , which has been in existence since 1981 .  The site is only in Hebrew.

The National Library of Israel and some of the academic libraries have already begun entering the danacode in MARC field 0247 |2 danacode. At the present time there are no plans to enter the data retroactively.

We welcome other libraries participation in recording the danacode in their bibliographic records.
