Hi everyone,

Posting this on behalf of colleagues in the LC Policy and Standards Division:

On April 8, 2013, LC began to make changes to access points in bibliographic records that were affected by the Phase Two changes to the LC/NACO Authority File. Initially LC plans to change and distribute no more than 30,000 bibliographic records each day (Monday-Friday) in addition to the normal load/distribution levels for bibliographic records. Testing of the batch changes indicated that this increased distribution of bibliographic records will require a minimum of 23 days to complete; however, other processing priorities may cause the updates to be temporarily suspended and the days may not be consecutive.

The same set of specifications used to upgrade the name authority records in Phase Two will be used to change the access points on bibliographic records. Here are some of the conditions:

1. All 1XX, 6XX , 700-730 , or 8XX access points will be changed according to the Phase Two specifications for name authority records (spelling out Dept., N.T., O.T., arr., etc.).

2. Changes to subject headings that contain the term violoncello will be included.

3. Bibliographic records with the legend [from old catalog] will also be included, although these records are not re-distributed.

With regard to 3) above: please be aware that this is not a clean-up project. That means that all access points that meet the specifications will be changed, regardless of whether they are incorrect, created under pre-AACR2 rules, or do not have a corresponding authority record in the LC/NAF.

A reminder: in the interim (until the changes to bibliographic records are completed) it is not necessary to report discrepancies between access points in the LC/NACO Authority File and access points in bibliographic records in the LC database. We'll send a follow-up announcement when the changes to bibliographic records have been completed. Please direct questions, comments, etc. to policy at loc.gov
