I love introductions, and it's been wonderful to get to know the members of
CSS.

I'm Kate Tanski, one of the CSS Members-at-Large. My path into comics
studies was through English, but since 2015 I've been working primarily on
the journalism/criticism/publishing side, which has given me the
opportunity to do some pretty cool stuff like interview Matt Fraction and
Steve Lieber about *Superman's Pal Jimmy Olsen*
<https://urldefense.com/v3/__https://womenwriteaboutcomics.com/2019/11/supermans-pal-jimmy-olsen-is-comics-good-place/__;!!KGKeukY!m_4LtfpV8qkFkWuLAE2qAs3RSTYS-ATtf2Hpjn0X591ubtT56mndJv0Cw-MFli7Bb8Vps9RGPZ0s$ >.
But mostly my professional work with comics is as the series editor for Comics
Academe on the Eisner Award Winning site WWAC
<https://urldefense.com/v3/__https://womenwriteaboutcomics.com/tag/comics-diary-academia/__;!!KGKeukY!m_4LtfpV8qkFkWuLAE2qAs3RSTYS-ATtf2Hpjn0X591ubtT56mndJv0Cw-MFli7Bb8Vps4foFEvh$ >.

Comics Academe was started by Francesca Lyn, and in 2015 I was asked by the
then Editor-in-Chief to write a couple posts about my experience teaching
with comics at Purdue. The next year, I became the series editor for Comics
Academe and my goal was to turn it into a space for public-facing
scholarship for women and non-binary individuals working with comics in the
academy. Personal essays and comics criticism are still the main focus of
what we publish, but we also decided to start publishing book reviews,
interviews, roundtables, convention diaries, and even began publishing an
ongoing interview series with zine libraries and zine librarians. In the
past few years it's been wonderful to see other sites like The Middle
Spaces appear, and to see CSS and comics studies legitimize public-facing
scholarship, and I am particularly proud of having published Zoe Smith's
essay 4 Colorism; Or the Ashiness of it All
<https://urldefense.com/v3/__https://womenwriteaboutcomics.com/2019/05/4-colorism-or-the-ashiness-of-it-all/__;!!KGKeukY!m_4LtfpV8qkFkWuLAE2qAs3RSTYS-ATtf2Hpjn0X591ubtT56mndJv0Cw-MFli7Bb8Vps5w08w91$ >
which won the CSS Gilbert Seldes Prize this past year.

Adrienne Resha is my assistant editor who is 100% responsible for getting
me involved with CSS, and saving my sanity. And as she said--we are always
open for pitches <https://urldefense.com/v3/__https://womenwriteaboutcomics.com/about/pitch-us/__;!!KGKeukY!m_4LtfpV8qkFkWuLAE2qAs3RSTYS-ATtf2Hpjn0X591ubtT56mndJv0Cw-MFli7Bb8Vps-9YmymA$ >.
Currently we publish monthly and try to schedule three months in advance,
but that's based on the current level of submissions. In the past, we were
able to publish a critical essay every month, as well as additional pieces
such as an interview, book review, or convention write-up, and I would love
to be able to publish at that rate again in 2021.

We'd also love to start paying our contributors, so I will add the link
here to our Patreon <https://urldefense.com/v3/__https://www.patreon.com/wwac__;!!KGKeukY!m_4LtfpV8qkFkWuLAE2qAs3RSTYS-ATtf2Hpjn0X591ubtT56mndJv0Cw-MFli7Bb8Vps0MoLYL0$ >. And just so you
know...a $10 donation before December means you will receive a special
holiday surprise in thanks, and I promise it is worth the $10.
