Hi all,

What a wonderful proliferation of people to find in my inbox this morning! I’ll add my voice to the chorus: I’m Charlotte (she/her), at the time of writing a graduate student at the University of Southern Denmark. I’m employed in the cultural studies department and currently finishing a dissertation on girls in contemporary superhero comics. I came into comics studies around four years ago and have hung around since then. My published work has been on the body politics of the 2011 Batgirl reboot, which can be found in the wonderful book Monstrous Women in Comics, edited by Samantha Langsdale and Elizabeth Coody (https://urldefense.com/v3/__https://www.upress.state.ms.us/Books/M/Monstrous-Women-in-Comics__;!!KGKeukY!lXA0YPiE2gK0pSqTsPtCcNIGCBvLHd5B2qH46-cPeKmvWh0wNYRpZ4gwaBFJBNLfgX8Vmh4A_-dI$ ), as well as a piece on the madness that was Nightwing comics in the 90s (found here; https://urldefense.com/v3/__https://journals.aau.dk/index.php/ak/article/view/5850__;!!KGKeukY!lXA0YPiE2gK0pSqTsPtCcNIGCBvLHd5B2qH46-cPeKmvWh0wNYRpZ4gwaBFJBNLfgX8VmrFXmX3Y$ - open access!).

I also blog about comics and feminism for the Danish comics site Nummer9 – if by chance you read Danish (or another Scandinavian language), that can be found here: https://urldefense.com/v3/__https://nummer9.dk/category/blog/feminichen/__;!!KGKeukY!lXA0YPiE2gK0pSqTsPtCcNIGCBvLHd5B2qH46-cPeKmvWh0wNYRpZ4gwaBFJBNLfgX8Vmlmdr-3Q$

Being located in Denmark and maintaining a scholarly network was enough of a challenge pre-pandemic, so I’m always happy to connect with folks online! I can be found on Twitter at @CharlotteJFab

Greetings!

It is so nice to see these introductions on the CSS listserv today. A bright spot in a dark year, and one that reminds me that a) I have amazing colleagues and b) there are so many people out there doing work in comics that I want to meet in-person someday! My name is Nick Miller, I am an assistant professor of English at Valdosta State University, and I am an early Americanist by training. Fortunately, that training put me in contact with the wonderful Jared Gardner—a connection that helped me to make the leap into comics and media studies once I finished my graduate training. I am one of Osvaldo Oyola’s two sons in the field (metaphorically speaking), and a regular contributor to The Middle Spaces—which Osvaldo already plugged. Most of my work focuses on queer studies and transmedia studies, including an essay on asexuality in Inks and one on Archie/Riverdale in Feminist Media Histories. I am currently co-editing a volume on the cultural politics of X-Men: The Animated Series with fellow CSS members and my seltzer-drinking chums: Jeremy Carnes and Margaret Galvan.

When we resume in-person conferences, you will likely find me riding the coattails of much smarter people from session to session and live-tweeting as rapidly as I can. I am a firm believer in being smart by affiliation! For those on Twitter, you can find me at @uncannydazzler. Yes, that Dazzler. The one and only. The one I wrote an entire chapter about for The Oxford Handbook of Comic Book Studies. You’re welcome!

Best,

:: Nick

Since we’re doing introductions:

I am Osvaldo Oyola. I got my PhD in 2014 and then after five years as a lecturer in NYU’s Expository Writing Program (but also teaching an occasional Latinx-American Lit class) I dropped out of the academic job market and moved on. Currently under/unemployed and sans affiliation, but I am still involved in comics scholarship, both through my role in the ICAF executive committee and running The Middle Spaces<https://urldefense.com/v3/__https:/nam12.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=https*3A*2F*2Furldefense.com*2Fv3*2F__https*3A*2F*2Fthemiddlespaces.com*2F__*3B!!KGKeukY!hTwTAse3uUTWJFbqjQsIpim7ImbBtFej8fHGw1DuVleyOAzJT95VvQvikA8PeIxh5-UoOQgobH7B*24&data=04*7C01*7Cnemiller*40valdosta.edu*7C0574ba18de5c448c172a08d88a63508c*7C25a5d3408abc4053b4bddc1213280353*7C0*7C0*7C637411506462446429*7CUnknown*7CTWFpbGZsb3d8eyJWIjoiMC4wLjAwMDAiLCJQIjoiV2luMzIiLCJBTiI6Ik1haWwiLCJXVCI6Mn0*3D*7C1000&sdata=oMf13wd5jJZFjs2s*2FAIn1hjVeJbCkm2HKe8OZzZVnmU*3D&reserved=0__;JSUlJSUlJSUlJSUlJSUlJSUlJSUlJSUlJQ!!KGKeukY!nBS8KCkFPJjf_SmmCOtmH1fbkhws4pd3XFysw0EeJoDU-Ahs5e_IBm2TLqv0jamLi3jGogPkLn22$> – a paying(!) blog for public facing scholarship on (mostly) comics (but also other aspects of pop culture, esp. pop music), work on which won me the Gilbert Seldes Prize from CSS in 2019.

While my field of study was Contemporary Transnational American Lit and identity which included comics (I come from literary studies, but have a strong cultural studies interest), most of my work for the last few years has been pretty much comics focused alone – in particular on representations of race and resistant reading in fan culture.

Good morning,
I am an adjunct instructor at the School of Library and Information Studies at the University of Alberta in Canada. I have been teaching an online graduate level course on the validity of comics for almost two decades as well as conducting workshops in library and education conferences on numerous benefits and issues around the format in schools and libraries. My research and writing on comics tends to focus on the intersection of folklore and oral storytelling in comic books. For example, my latest writing for the monograph Monsters edited by Simon Bacon, analyzes the reworking of the folklore of Baba Yaga in the comic book world of Hellboy.

Yours in Stories,

So glad to see these introductions!

I'm Charles Hatfield, a cofounder of CSS, and an English prof at CSU Northridge since (gulp!) 2001. In 2005, I founded a comics course that has become a popular elective at CSUN and is now taught by many of my colleagues too. I am fascinated by many aspects of comics and comics studies. I've been particularly interested in aesthetics and form, children's comics (and depictions of childhood in comics), alternative comics, graphic memoir, and Jack Kirby. I co-edit, with Rebecca Wanzo and Jared Gardner, the Ohio State UP's series "Studies in Comics and Cartoons."

This Thursday, Nov, 19, I'm co-hosting a Zoom teach-in on the March trilogy that I'll hype in a separate post!

Best to all,

CH
