“If a picture is worth a thousand words, Bill Mauldin drew hundreds of
*novels*,” writes Academy Award-winning actor Tom Hanks in the preface
to *DRAWING
FIRE: The Editorial Cartoons of Bill Mauldin*, edited by Todd DePastino
(Pritzker Military Museum & Library, Sept. 1, 2020, $35.00).
Long known as the most prominent cartoonist of World War II, the
two-time Pulitzer Prize winner actually enjoyed a career that spanned five
wars overseas and five decades of tumult at home. Now, for the first time,
a selection of both his wartime *and* political cartoons are explored in an
illustrated single volume, featuring selections from Chicago’s Pritzker
Military Museum & Library, which has more than 4,500 Mauldin cartoons in
its collections.

The publication of *DRAWING FIRE* kicks off a 100th birthday
celebration that will include a spring 2021 exhibition at the Pritzker
Military Museum & Library in Chicago, which will move to the Eisenhower
Library in Abilene, Kansas later in the year. A documentary film on Mauldin
will be released in late 2020. The artist's 100th birthday would have been
on October 29th, 2021.
Edited by Mauldin’s biographer, Todd DePastino, and featuring 150
images, *DRAWING FIRE* includes essays by DePastino; NBC’s Tom Brokaw; Jean
Schulz, widow of Peanuts creator Charles Schulz; Christina M. Knopf of SUNY
Cortland; Denise Neil of the 45th Infantry Museum; G. Kurt Piehler of
Florida State University; Cord A. Scott of the University of Maryland,
Global Campus for Asia; and Col. Jennifer N. Pritzker, founder of the
Pritzker Military Museum & Library.
*PDFs of the entire book will be available upon request starting June
1. Please reply to this email to request a PDF. *
To coincide with the publication of *DRAWING FIRE, *a selection of
materials will be available for media coverage, including downloadable
Mauldin cartoons and video clips from the documentary. Editor Todd
DePastino and Dr. Rob Havers, President and CEO of the Pritzker Military
Museum & Library, will be available for interviews.
