Hi CSS Friends and Colleagues!

My name is Alex Berglund, and I am the incoming Principal Editor for the Journal of Language and Literacy Education (JoLLE). JoLLE is a double-masked, peer-reviewed, open access, scholarly journal housed in the Department of Language & Literacy Education in the College of Education at The University of Georgia. JoLLE publishes two issues each year: one in the fall and one in the spring. The fall issue is comprised of open submissions, and the spring issue is aligned with the theme of that year’s JoLLE at UGA® Winter Conference. For each of the two annual issues, each produced during a semester on the academic calendar, JoLLE employs social media and other web-based platforms to make all material immediately available for free download to any visitor.

Each month, we publish an essay, entitled Scholars Speak Out, that is meant to highlight different concerns and/or interests in the field. The topics are varied and writers often use this as a platform to talk more casually about their work, their concerns in education, and/or to make a call to action of some kind. Submissions are typically between 1000 and 1500 words in length. Feel free to take a look at the Scholars Speaks Out page (http://jolle.coe.uga.edu/scholars-speak-out/) as well as some of the archived pieces from the past year (http://jolle.coe.uga.edu/archive-of-scholars-speak-out/). Some of my personal favorites include the following:

Garcia, A. (2018, December). More than taking care: Literacies research within legacies of harm. Journal of Language and Literacy Education. Available at http://jolle.coe.uga.edu/wp-content/uploads/2018/12/SSO_December2018_Garcia.pdf

Hughes, H. E. (2017, November). White supremacy? Yeah, it’s real: Breathing in/justice-oriented teacher education. Journal of Language and Literacy Education. Available at http://jolle.coe.uga.edu/wp-content/uploads/2014/01/SSO-November-2017_Hughes_Final6.pdf

After witnessing so much of your amazing work at CSS 2019 and becoming a part of this welcoming and inclusive community, I would love to feature contributions from the field of comics studies this year during my tenure as Principal Editor! Please feel free to reach out with any questions that you may have and/or if you're interested in crafting a piece for this feature.

Best,

Alex
