GRANTS AND AWARDS


  *   Erin Stewartson was awarded an ACI Foundation Concrete Materials Fellowship by the American Concrete Institute. Fellowship recipients receive a $10,000 (USD) educational stipend; paid travel expenses and attendance fees to two ACI conventions; and assistance in finding an industry mentor. Erin is a member of Lisa Burris' Cementitious Materials Novel Technologies Research Group (CeMNT).


HONORS AND PRIZES


  *   Allison is pleased to announce that Natalie Hull was recognized with a 2021 Excellence in Undergraduate Research Mentoring award through Ohio State's Office of Undergraduate Research and Creative Inquiry. The citation noted Natalie's passion in environmental engineering as inspiring to students and Natalie's patience in cultivating students' research skills. This is a student-nominated award which reflects well on our students by taking the time to recognize great mentoring. Congratulations!!!


  *   Allison is pleased to share that Mark McCord was recognized as a SP21 Buckeye Access All-Star. This is a student-nominated award recognizing instructor commitment to promoting access for students with disabilities. Mark was noted by Student Life Disabilities Services for receiving this recognition in both semesters this academic year - 'Amazing'. Congratulations!!!


NEW RESEARCH & LEADERSHIP INITIATIVES

  *   Jeffrey Bielicki was named to the first cohort for the Growing Research Opportunities (GRO) Academy<https://research.osu.edu/twenty-one-researchers-selected-for-the-inaugural-gro-academy-cohort/>. Created by Ohio State's Enterprise for Research, Innovation, and Knowledge (ERIK), this new research leadership development program equips faculty with the skills needed to lead complex, interdisciplinary collaborations in pursuit of external funding. The cohort will engage in educational sessions led by distinguished scholars and practitioners who study team science. Participants will learn and engage in skill-building activities that help them understand the research evidence supporting interdisciplinary team science and how to lead and manage a diverse and inclusive team.

  *   Dorota Grejner-Brzezinska was named principal investigator of the National Science Foundation's Engineering Research Visioning Alliance<http://www.ervacommunity.org/> (ERVA). The initiative was created to provide the engineering community with a process for identifying bold and societally impactful engineering research directions that will place the U.S. in a leading position to realize a better future for all.



PUBLICATIONS AND CONFERENCE PAPERS

  *   A paper by graduate students Kate Villars (author) and Yuzhou Huang (co-author) was featured in the February 2021 AEESP newsletter. Removal of the cyanotoxin microcystin-LR from drinking water using granular activated carbon. (Environ. Eng. Sci. 37) addressed the use of granular activated carbon (GAC) for removal of microcystin-LR (MLR). ADVANCEMENT


  *   Courtney Ross recently secured a $450,000 estate gift for department discretionary funding. Future discretionary support is critical to enable the department to be responsive to relevant needs. In other Advancement news, DLZ Corporation provided a $100,000 gift in AU20 to name the Materials Testing lab in Bolz Hall. The signage was recently installed and looks great. We will plan on hosting an official ribbon cutting when it is safe to do so.
