Hi everyone,
As you plan your schedule for Autumn 2023 I hope you will consider my Design and Analysis of Experiments technical elective (CBE 5779) described below. This course tends to fill up, so I suggest enrolling as soon as possible if you are interested.
-----------------------------------
CBE 5779: Design and Analysis of Experiments
Credits: 3
Term: Autumn 2023
When: MoWeFr 1:50-2:45 PM
Where: Hagerty Hall 180
Textbook: "Design and Analysis of Experiments", Douglas C. Montgomery, 10th edition, ISBN: 978-1-119-49244-3. Older versions (9th or 8th or 7th) are also fine. Wiley has an e-text version of the full textbook available. Purchase or rental options are also available from Amazon for the same prices.
The goal of CBE 5779 is to learn how to properly design experiments, how to analyze the data collected from an experimental study, how to draw statistically valid conclusions from this analysis, and how to develop predictive models. These skills can be applied in almost every area of science and engineering, and are especially important in many "real world" situations where problems are too complex to be solved by a purely fundamental approach. In my own experience in industry, I discovered experimental design and statistical analysis of data to be extremely important - I also found that my education hadn't prepared me very well in these areas. In a single semester we will not cover advanced topics, but just learning the basics will help you become a much more versatile engineer. Every year I receive a surprising number of emails from former students telling me they're using what they learned in this class on their job - for me as a professor, there's nothing better than knowing former students are putting what they learned to good use!
This course does not require any computer programming and does not assume that you've previously taken a course in statistics. We do make extensive use of JMP, a powerful statistical software package widely used in industry and academics, and available free to all OSU students thanks to a University site license.
Technical elective requirements for Chemical Engineering majors (undergraduate program): CBE 5779 can be used as either your math/stat elective, OR a CBE 5000-level elective, but not both.
