Chapter 7 EOC problem - error in solutions manual for 13th & 14th ed.

The following error occurs in the solutions manual for both the
13th and 14th editions.

For problem 7.46(a) Ru^3+ the electron configuration is given as
[Kr]3d^5. It should be [Kr]4d^5. It is in the 5th row (period).

Ru is actually an exception you didn't have to know.  It's electron
configuration is

[Kr]5s^1 4d^7 (you would have expected [Kr]5s^2 4d^6).

The electrons come out of the valence shell first.  This means for the
transition metals the electrons come out of the s subshell first, the
ns (in this case the 5s) and then the (n-1)d (in this case the 4d).

By the way, even if you had written the wrong electron config.
for Ru ([Kr]5s^2 4d^6) and then removed 3 electrons you would still
get the correct electron config. for the Ru^3+ ion.
