Missing class components - everyone please read

I'm getting several people with COVID related problems. I know not
everyone needs this right now but please try to remember I've sent it.
Read the following so if miss things for any reason you know what we're
doing and what you should do.

If you have COVID we don't need any documents showing this. You
can send it if you wish but we don't need it. You need to contact SLDS
(see the syllabus). They may ask for something. They will send you an
excuse which you forward to me and the lab supervisors. We need this
because having COVID means you could be out for several days or
more than a week.

Much of the rest of this applies if you miss things for any reason.

We are not live streaming lectures or recording them. There are
pre-recorded lectures in Carmen (see the "Lecture" module in the
"Modules" tab in the menu). There are also some supplemental videos
covering specific topics from another lecturer in the department. My
pre-recorded lecture videos are there by week (not by specific lecture).
I would not suggest people use these in order to skip lecture. You're
still better off coming to lecture. I may say other things or have changed
some things since the pre-recorded lectures were made and I do demos
in class which aren't in the pre-recorded lectures. However, if you must
miss due to an illness or emergency they're there so you won't fall behind.

I also suggest if you know anyone in class ask them to send you notes.
If they're using Notability on an iPad they can record the audio (there's
a microphone symbol at the top you click for this). They can send you
the native Notability file with the audio recorded. If you don't have
Notability they can send you a PDF with an MP4 audio file.

If you know you will miss recitation, please let me know who is
your recitation TA and CC them on the e-mail to me.

For recitations or quizzes we have a mechanism for what happens
when you miss one of these, as discussed in the syllabus. The
quizzes are on-line via Carmen so you might still be able to take
them, if you're not feeling too ill. I suggest you take the quiz unless
you're just too sick to do so. We drop the 2 lowest quiz scores and
the 2 lowest recitation attendance scores. If you miss a recitation or
a quiz for ANY reason it is one of the dropped scores. If you miss
due to illness, you should still get a written excuse. Even with the
excuse it still counts toward the drops.

if you're going to miss lab, you need to e-mail the lab supervisors.
I can't make any decisions about lab policies and procedures.

If you wind up getting sick, for any reason, and will miss a midterm,
you can find what to do in Carmen under Shortcuts at the bottom of
the homepage. You'll see "Exam Conflicts" and a link to "Alternate
and Make-up Midterm Policy". You need to do this for an exam as
I don't have anything to do with determining if your excuse is valid
when it comes to exams. We do NOT drop any exam scores.
