titrations, solubility - rest of ch 17 and ch 19

We got through much of section 17.3 (titrations) last Wed.  I finished it
up today.  That's kind of the "end" on acid-base chemistry (but you will
use some of this knowledge in the rest of the chapter and later in future
chapters).

Understanding acids, bases, buffers and acid-base titrations is important,
not just for our class but organic chemistry and biology related classes.
This is why I spent essentially the last 2 lectures on sections 17.1
(common
ion equilibria), 17.2 (buffers) & 17.3 (titrations).  We'll go over some of
this again on Monday or Wed, after you've had a chance to look over 17.3
and the titration curve I'm sending out.

Titrations pretty much combine much of what we covered in chapter 16
and sections 17.1-17.2 in one problem.

I also did a problem dealing with the reaction of a weak acid with a weak
base and getting the equil. constant for such a rxn. There are homework
problems covering this in ch 16 (16.105 & 16.126).  This is just an
application
of adding equations together to get another eqn and then multiplying the
K's.

We started the 2nd half of chapter 17 today (solubility equilibria of
slightly to
insoluble salts).  We did section 17.4  and are about halfway through 17.5.
I plan to finish ch 17 by next Mon or Wed.  We may even start Ch 19 on
Mon., certainly by next Wed.  If you look at my ch 19 notes the first few
pages are a review of some things from ch 5.  You really need to review
ch 5 before we start ch 19.  We'll be doing some things in ch 19 which are
similar to some things you did in ch 5.  Look at the first 17 pages of the
notes which review ch 5 material.  If you have trouble understanding what's
there you may have to review the ch 5 material in the book.  I'm not sure if
I will cover these pages in lecture or not but if I do I'll be going
through this
review material pretty quickly.
