Are cell phones in class okay? I know how "important" it is to
always be connected to others now a days. I would appreciate them
not ringing in class. I'm not going to throw you out of class if it
happens
to ring but it will cause a momentary disruption. Also, if you are texting
or surfing the web that's up to you but it may mean you miss something.
Contrary to popular belief, people are not all that capable of multitasking
and actually getting anything useful out of what you are experiencing.
Who knows, some day I may call on you in class and ask what I just said
or ask you a question and if you are busy with other things you may not be
able to answer.
The lab supervisors may have already sent something about this so
this my simply be reiterating what's been stated.
We do *NOT *allow cell phones *in lab *unless the TA gives specific
permission to do so. They need to be put away in your book bags
(not just in the "cubby" holes under the lab benches or your pocket).
We don't want you texting, surfing the internet, playing games, etc.
while you're suppose to be working. We want you paying attention
to what you're doing. Being distracted could cause you to make a
mistake, have an accident, not finish the exp., etc. If you absolutely
need to use the cell phone for something you will have to go into the
hallway. While in lab we want you concentrating on the tasks at hand.
If the TA sees you using your cell phone w/o permission they will
deduct points from your lab grade. Laptops or tablets are also not
allowed in lab unless your TA gives permission. It's generally not a
good idea to have them out, especially a laptop, while working with
chemicals as they could spill on your laptop/tablet and probably
break it.
No cell phones allowed are allowed during review/quiz sessions.
They must be turned off and put away. ALL electronics except
your calculator must be turned off and put away, including internet
capable smartwatches.
