I'm sending this again because I'm not sure it went through.

Hello. I'm Dr. Zellmer. I will be sending other e-mails in the
next few days. Expect to get many more during the semester.

If you are on the wait list you are also receiving this message.
It doesn't mean you got in the class.

This is just a quick e-mail because I'm getting a number of
questions about the class and books required. The syllabus is
up. My class web pages and Carmen are almost ready but I'm giving
things one more check so there may still be some minor changes. I
will be sending out another e-mail shortly with more information
about the class. If you are on the waiting list you are also getting
this e-mail.

My home page is,

http://www.chemistry.osu.edu/~rzellmer/

There you will find a link to our class page (which has most
of what will be there at this point). You will find
other things as well. More will come later.

In the meantime, this is what I know about the textbooks:

1) Someone asked about the ISBN numbers for the textbook, lab manual and lab
notebook. You can find these things by going to the Barnes &
Noble web site
(for OSU - ISBN numbers may be specific to this site,
particularly for the textbook),

http://ohiostate.bncollege.com

       Click on "Textbooks".
Then click on "Select Term" (Fall).
Then click on "Select Department" (CHEM)
Then click on "Select Course" (1220)
Then click on "Select Section" (14796)
       Then click on "Find Materials".

You will see the required books. The textbook listed (which they've
marked "required") is the OSU custom edition and is only sold at the
OSU B&N. You might check the other campus bookstores. They've
listed it as the 15th edition. It is NOT. It is the 13th
edition. That is the
latest edition we're using this summer.

Technically you only need the *textbook *(13th, 12th or 11th
editions are fine),
*lab notebook *and *lab manual*.

*Textbook:*_Chemistry, The Central Science (13__^th __Ed)_, Brown,
LeMay, Bursten, Murphy, Woodward & Stoltzfus --/any 13 edition - used,
soft-cover, OSU custom edition (white cover), ebook will do. You can
use the ///11th or 12th editions as well/. Bookstores and online sites
may try to sell you more - you do NOT NEED anything else! Be warned
that things ordered online often do not ship as you might expect. You
do *not *need anything which comes with Mastering Chemistry on-line
homework since we will not be using it. As of this moment, I'm *not
*planning on using on-line homework, but the Vice Chair could decide
differently in the next day or so. I'll let everyone know if this changes./

/You may want to check into the Student Guide for the edition you get.
It offers extra explanations and examples for each section in the
textbook. It also as extra problems at the end of each of its chapters
(although they appear to be a little easier than the End-of-Chapter
problems in the textbook). This is not needed but some students have
told me they have found it to be useful./

Chemistry "Custom"//*ISBN:* 9781323233252 (OSU custom edition) $282.60
OSU Custom 13th edition (book only) - sold only
at B&N, you can maybe still find
just the textbook at another campus bookstore or
on line (Amazon has used ones).

The 11th, 12th editions or a used 13th edition of the textbook will
all work. The Student Guide can be useful. You can find used editions
of the SG on Amazon.

*Lab Manual*: _Chemistry 12__50 General Chemistry Laboratory Manual_,
Hayden-McNeil Publishing, Inc.
/This is specific for each school year. Cannot use one from the past.
It should have 2016-2017
on the cover. /*ISBN:* 9780738084916

*Lab Notebook*: _100 Page Student Lab Workbook_, Hayden-McNeil
Publishing, Inc. //*ISBN:* 2818440125478

2) As of the time of this e-mail, my plan is we won't be using
on-line homework. Thus, you don't need any
package which comes with a code for on-line homework (such as
Mastering Chemistry or Sapling Learning).
This may change depending on what the Vice Chair decides in the
next couple of days. I'll let you know
if he decides we will have to use on-line homework.

3) Do I suggest you buy the book on line or at one of the bookstores on
campus?

I really can't answer this other than to say at this late date
ordering it on line may
result in not getting the book before the semester starts.

        A) Barnes & Noble's corporate web site has several options:
textbook (hardcover) $232.98 (new) $51.87 (rent)
$143.53 (used)
                 e-text $111.85 (rent) $178.99 (buy)
textbook (3-hole punch with MC and eText) $173 (new),
used from $59
                 Student guide $76
                 Lab manual $40
                 Lab notebook $25

         B) Amazon has 11th, 12th and 13th editions both new and used,
hardcover, paperback.

         C) There is another bookstore on campus. Go to the following
link on my homepage
                 for bookstore info,

*Bookstore Locations and Phone Numbers*
<http://chemistry.osu.edu/%7Erzellmer/bookstores.htm>

4) Can you use the 11th, 12th or 13th editions of the textbook?

Yes. There aren't many differences between the editions and I
will announce
these in class and they will be on my web site for the class (at
the "Notes" link).
I have homework assignments for all four editions on my class web
page.
The publisher's solutions manual for all these editions, with
worked out solutions
for all end-of-chapter homework exercises can be found on the
Carmen class web page.

5) I'm retaking the class, can I use my old notebook?

Yes. However, you must come see Dr. Moga or me and bring your notebook
     before starting lab.

6) We are very particular on the calculators used during quizzes and exams.
       Go to the following link,

http://chemistry.osu.edu/~rzellmer/calc.htm

Only two calculators are allowed, _TI-30XIIs or TI-30Xa_. _*No*_
*other *calculators
are permitted for use on quizzes or exams. /You MUST have _*ONE*_
of these two
models. Both are available at the bookstore. They are likely
cheaper at
off-campus locations (Target, Office Max, etc.)./

       A TI-35, TI-36, TI-81, TI-86, etc. is not allowed.

We will not allow any other calculators, even if they are exactly
like one of the listed ones.
We won't even allow simple bank calculators, cell phone
calculators, Google watch, etc.
Please do NOT tell us that you were allowed to use some other
calculator in another chem
course. If you were, they were wrong to allow you to use it. It
will NOT be allowed in
       this class.

I suggest you use the calculator you will use on the quizzes and
exams when you do your
homework. That way you will know how to use it when you take a
quiz or exam.
