I'm sending this again because I'm not sure it went through.<br>
<br>
Hello. I'm Dr. Zellmer. I will be sending other e-mails in the<br>
next few days. Expect to get many more during the semester.<br>
<br>
If you are on the wait list you are also receiving this message.<br>
It doesn't mean you got in the class.<br>
<br>
This is just a quick e-mail because I'm getting a number of<br>
questions about the class and books required. The syllabus is<br>
up. My class web pages and Carmen are almost ready but I'm giving<br>
things one more check so there may still be some minor changes. I<br>
will be sending out another e-mail shortly with more information<br>
about the class. If you are on the waiting list you are also getting<br>
this e-mail.<br>
<br>
My home page is,<br>
<br>
<a class="moz-txt-link-freetext"
href="http://www.chemistry.osu.edu/%7Erzellmer/">http://www.chemistry.osu.edu/~rzellmer/</a><br>
<br>
There you will find a link to our class page (which has most<br>
of what will be there at this point). You will find<br>
other things as well. More will come later.<br>
<br>
In the meantime, this is what I know about the textbooks:<br>
<br>
1) Someone asked about the ISBN numbers for the textbook, lab manual
and lab<br>
notebook. You can find these things by going to the Barnes
& Noble web site<br>
(for OSU - ISBN numbers may be specific to this site,
particularly for the textbook),<br>
<br>
<a class="moz-txt-link-freetext"
href="http://ohiostate.bncollege.com">http://ohiostate.bncollege.com</a><br>
<br>
Click on "Textbooks".<br>
Then click on "Select Term" (Fall).<br>
Then click on "Select Department" (CHEM)<br>
Then click on "Select Course" (1220)<br>
Then click on "Select Section" (14796)<br>
Then click on "Find Materials".<br>
<br>
You will see the required books. The textbook listed (which
they've<br>
marked "required") is the OSU custom edition and is only sold
at the<br>
OSU B&N. You might check the other campus bookstores.
They've<br>
listed it as the 15th edition. It is NOT. It is the 13th
edition. That is the<br>
latest edition we're using this summer.<br>
<br>
Technically you only need the <b>textbook </b>(13th, 12th or
11th editions are fine),<br>
<b>lab notebook </b>and <b>lab manual</b>. <br>

</span>2) As of the time of this e-mail, my plan is we won't be
using on-line homework. Thus, you don't need any<br>
package which comes with a code for on-line homework (such
as Mastering Chemistry or Sapling Learning).<br>
This may change depending on what the Vice Chair decides in
the next couple of days. I'll let you know<br>
if he decides we will have to use on-line homework.<br>
<br>
3) Do I suggest you buy the book on line or at one of the bookstores
on campus?<br>
<br>
I really can't answer this other than to say at this late date
ordering it on line may<br>
result in not getting the book before the semester starts. <br>
<br>
A) Barnes & Noble's corporate web site has several
options:<br>
textbook (hardcover) $232.98 (new) $51.87 (rent)
$143.53 (used)<br>
e-text $111.85 (rent) $178.99 (buy)<br>
textbook (3-hole punch with MC and eText) $173
(new), used from $59<br>
Student guide $76<br>
Lab manual $40<br>
Lab notebook $25<br>
<br>
B) Amazon has 11th, 12th and 13th editions both new and
used, hardcover, paperback.<br>
<br>
C) There is another bookstore on campus. Go to the
following link on my homepage<br>
for bookstore info,<br>
<br>
<a
href="http://chemistry.osu.edu/%7Erzellmer/bookstores.htm"><b>Bookstore
Locations and Phone Numbers</b></a> <br>
<br>
4) Can you use the 11th, 12th or 13th editions of the textbook?<br>
<br>
Yes. There aren't many differences between the editions and I
will announce<br>
these in class and they will be on my web site for the class
(at the "Notes" link).<br>
I have homework assignments for all four editions on my class
web page.<br>
The publisher's solutions manual for all these editions, with
worked out solutions<br>
for all end-of-chapter homework exercises can be found on the
Carmen class web page.<br>
<br>
5) I'm retaking the class, can I use my old notebook?<br>
<br>
Yes. However, you must come see Dr. Moga or me and bring your
notebook<br>
before starting lab.<br>
<br>
6) We are very particular on the calculators used during quizzes and
exams.<br>
Go to the following link,<br>
<br>
<a class="moz-txt-link-freetext"
href="http://chemistry.osu.edu/%7Erzellmer/calc.htm">http://chemistry.osu.edu/~rzellmer/calc.htm</a>
<br>
<span
style="font-family:"Calibri","sans-serif";color:black"><br>
Only two calculators are allowed, <u>TI-30XIIs or TI-30Xa</u>.
<u><b>No</b></u> <b>other </b>calculators<br>
are permitted for use on quizzes or exams. <i>You MUST have
<u><b>ONE</b></u> of these two<br>
models. Both are available at the bookstore. They are
likely cheaper at<br>
off-campus locations (Target, Office Max, etc.).</i></span><span
style="font-size:10.0pt;font-family:"Tahoma","sans-serif"">
</span><br>
<br>
A TI-35, TI-36, TI-81, TI-86, etc. is not allowed. <br>
<br>
We will not allow any other calculators, even if they are
exactly like one of the listed ones.<br>
We won't even allow simple bank calculators, cell phone
calculators, Google watch, etc.<br>
Please do NOT tell us that you were allowed to use some other
calculator in another chem<br>
course. If you were, they were wrong to allow you to use it.
It will NOT be allowed in<br>
this class.<br>
<br>
I suggest you use the calculator you will use on the quizzes
and exams when you do your<br>
homework. That way you will know how to use it when you take
a quiz or exam.<br>
