The discussion below is about solids and ch 12.

I will discuss this in lecture as well. I mentioned this in a previous e-mail. We
won't be covering section 11.7 (liquid crystals) or ionic liquids in ch 11 (in
a "Chemistry and Sustainability" box in section 11.3) in detail. They won't
be on the final exam.

For solids, the material we absolutely must cover was in ch 11 in the 11th
edition. I've uploaded this material about solids in ch 11 of the 11th edition
to Carmen. It's in the "Lecture" module. You'll see the "Chapter 12: Solids
and Modern Materials" page. There you'll find the 11th edition textbook
material related to solids. You will also find the end-of-chapter exercises
from the 11th edition there as well. There's also a link to the solutions to
these EOCEs for the 11th edition..

There are details about what is covered in the various editions is on the
class web page (not Carmen) under the "Notes" link.

The main things I'm going to cover about solids deals with unit cells and
unit-cell calculations and the 4 types of solids based on attractive forces.
You can get the material I will be discussing in lecture from Ch 12 in our
current edition but it's more spread out and not as easy to follow as it will
be if you're using what I've posted on Carmen.

I hope this all makes sense.
