Thanks for a good semester

I want to say thanks for a good semester. I know I didn't
get to know all of you or learn your names but don't be surprised
if I remember some of your faces (at least if I saw you in class).
I may even remember some of your names if we had the chance
to speak on more than one occasion. Forgive me though if I
don't.

Thanks for your cooperation at the final. We got set up pretty
quickly and out pretty quickly.

I want to say a special thanks to those who continued to come to
lecture. I'm grateful for that. It's much easier to lecture when people
are there. I hope no matter what the outcome, you can say you
learned something. I think there were times we actually had a little
fun and laughed a little. Whoever thought you would be able to
laugh during a chemistry lecture. Maybe you even learned something
new and found a few things interesting (like how geckos can walk
on walls or you can drink boiling water).

I know these courses can be tough and we cover a lot of material.
Chemistry is done so you can all rest a little easier. I know some
of you are done for good and are probably really happy about that.
I know some of you may have to repeat. That's not the end of
the world, as you may think right now. It is not the worse thing that
will happen to you in your life. It happens now and then, even to the
best of students. If you will be retaking the course, please speak to
me before you do, even if I'm not your instructor. I'm sure if approached
properly anyone can pass this course and do well. I don't want you
to have to repeat a third time.

The total scores and grades will be up in Carmen later this afternoon.
It will take awhile to get them to the Registrar (BuckeyeLink) because
Carmen doesn't seem to be transferring grades to the Registrar for
large enrollment classes, all of our Chem classes, and the way around
this problem is taking longer. I apologize for this taking so long but it's
not in our control. The grades were discussed with the Vice Chair and
the grade cuts were set by both myself and the Vice Chair. While I didn't
get everything I wanted, I got as close as possible.

Before e-mailing to ask if there was a "curve" think about what a 'normal'
grading scale is and then look at your score and your letter grade. The
raw scores were not adjusted but the grades were adjusted to a curve,
although the "curve" was not very big since our class average was
close to a "normal" average.

Have a good break. Good luck next year. I'm sure I'll see some of you
roaming our hallways.

I will answer individual e-mails which have been sent in the next couple
of days.
