[Ati_assoc] Dairy Challenge events

ATI Family:

I want to share with you the recent participation by several Ohio State ATI students in the 2016 Dairy Challenge activities.

Students enrolled in the ANMLTEC 3177T Dairy Cattle Feeding Management and 3407T Dairy Facilities, Environment, and Equipment classes have the opportunity to participate in two Dairy Challenge events during the semester.  Dairy Challenge is where students evaluate a host farm in the role of a consultant.  The students are able to ask questions of the farm ownership team; evaluation of financial, production, health, nutrition, reproduction, growth, and other herd records; and complete access to the farm facility, animals, and equipment.  The students then prepare a presentation to highlight their findings:  areas of excellence and areas of improvement.  The presentation is given to a panel of industry experts and to the farm family.

Here is the information for student participation and results for the 2016 Ohio Dairy Challenge and the Northeast Regional Dairy Challenge.

Ohio Dairy Challenge (October 21 and 22):  This event is open to students enrolled at OSU-Columbus and second year students at Ohio State ATI.  In 2016, a total of 19 teams competed.  Three teams were from Ohio State ATI.  The team made up of John Paulin, Sarah Hartzler, and Allison Mangun placed first; Hannah Dye, Jeremy Thornton, and Zach Berry comprised the third place team; and Logan Sauser, Thomas DiGiovanni, and Brian Stought also competed as a team.

The Northeast Regional Dairy Challenge (November 3-6) was held in Glenn Falls, NY this year.  At the regional challenge, the 5-member teams are made up of one individual from different universities; for example:  ATI, Cornell, Penn State, Cobleskill, and Vermont.  Five Ohio State ATI students participated in the 2016 Northeast Regional Dairy Challenge:  John Paulin, Allison Mangun, Hannah Dye, Nathaniel Kinney, and Josh Keller.  Hannah Dye was a member of one of the winning teams.

Please congratulate these students for their successful participation in the Dairy Challenge events.  Dr. Shaun Wellert accompanied them as their advisor and coach.
