I'm very pleased to share the link to Kabe Wilson's recent film, Looking for Virginia: An Artist's Journey Through 100 Archives, which launched at the University of Sussex Centre for Modernist Studies in May 2023.

In late 2019 Kabe Wilson set out to find two old photos, intending them to be part of birthday gifts. What happened next was not at all what he expected - in the bewildering three years that followed he went back in time through multiple lives, uncovering photos of events he was never aware had happened, social encounters few would believe possible, racist letters, undeveloped negatives and a sketchbook concealing truths about a famous painting. He travelled between Ethiopia and Sussex in both halves of the twentieth century, walked across the Midlands and the Cotswolds, sat with Emperors on the pier and bumped into Virginia Woolf on the Hove seafront. It is a story of beach holidays that never happened or happened on the wrong beaches, refugees lost and found, friends found and lost, a hypermnesic dream, a cliff over a secret train tunnel and a lighthouse now situated in a park.

The culmination of his residency at the Centre for Modernist Studies, this multi-media presentation centres around the story of the ten paintings of Brighton and Sussex he produced during the 2020 lockdown period, and the exciting art history discovery that led to one of them becoming the cover image of a new edition of Virginia Woolf's To the Lighthouse. By guiding us through a century of archives, in more than one sense, Kabe challenges our understandings of archival work, showing that every life is a mystery marked by constant overlaps between people, times and places, and how memory and archive can combine to offer vital clues to the past that prove that we are all ultimately and powerfully connected.
