Hi Jeremy,

That means "to silence" (on the part of humans)--there was no
reaction--only the sound of crickets. On my university campus, in
North Carolina, I've heard variations of this expression frequently in the
past few years, especially when it comes to teaching; e.g., my lecture was
met by "crickets."
