Dear Danell

Thanks for the kind comments Vara!

For Snapshots I obtained permissions from the Society of Authors who handle the Woolf estate:
https://urldefense.com/v3/__https://www2.societyofauthors.org/estates/__;!!KGKeukY!ym4MV_XW6AsOkjURLoStzEkgKNOA2wGNpJsUCcuKkkOSE9VG8hnDg_S6zw-CwTXCY6UDg-1EtjPcfsk8SjJgbn_WVBtAsXa-$
And permissions from the Houghton Library, Harvard and the Tate.

I am currently preparing a second edition of Snapshots to be published by Yale UP as Bloomsbury Photographs with a completely new look – complete with a new chapter on the photo albums of Lytton Strachey and Dora Carrington (and some of their photographs – not of Woolf and family – but wonderful photos of Henrietta Bingham, Carrington et al), an index (sorely missing in Snapshots), and corrections.

So just to let you know the current position re copyright.

The Lytton/Carrington albums are not digitised but there are good descriptions of the contents of each on line in the King’s College Cambridge on-line archive catalogue.
https://urldefense.com/v3/__https://archivesearch.lib.cam.ac.uk/repositories/7/archival_objects/280265__;!!KGKeukY!ym4MV_XW6AsOkjURLoStzEkgKNOA2wGNpJsUCcuKkkOSE9VG8hnDg_S6zw-CwTXCY6UDg-1EtjPcfsk8SjJgbn_WVHA3S3Kh$
Just click onto the links in the right hand side bar.

But as I say not of use for Woolf and family.

I applied for an extension of copyright to both Houghton and the Tate.

Although wonderfully, Houghton do not now charge for permissions, Houghton do not have (as far as I know) the Dreadnought Hoax photograph. They do have the Zanzibar Hoax photo (attached) which is Monk’s House Album 1, p. 59. You can find this (and all the album photos) digitised on-line on Vara’s helpful link below. I have listed the exact album page number for each photo in Snapshots. Just to note the page numbers for Album 3 were incorrect (because I omitted a blank page at the beginning of the album) so just add one to each page number – page 42 should be p. 43 etc. as I will do in my corrections

Sadly the Tate has privatised its image service. This is my search for the Bell photos.
https://urldefense.com/v3/__https://www.tate-images.com/results.asp?search=Vanessa*20Bell__;JQ!!KGKeukY!ym4MV_XW6AsOkjURLoStzEkgKNOA2wGNpJsUCcuKkkOSE9VG8hnDg_S6zw-CwTXCY6UDg-1EtjPcfsk8SjJgbn_WVPmojyEs$

In 2005 the Tate charged me £569.88 for the Bell photos (99 photos).
In 2020 they are ‘willing’ they say to give me a 20% ‘discount’ and charge me £5463.04
I am in correspondence with Yale to see if Yale would be happy for me to reduce the number of Bell photographs to 65 (which would still be around £3,500).

My advice would be to avoid the Tate.

Hope this is helpful and very best of luck.
Maggie

Hi Danell, Congrats! That's excellent news—and it's very exciting indeed to know that soon we will know much more about the Dreadnought hoax thanks to your stellar work. The Smith College Library has the Leslie Stephen photograph album (https: //www. smith. edu/libraries/libs/rarebook/exhibitions/stephen/).

The Monks House photographs are at the Hollis Library at Harvard. Maggie Humm, who compiled the beautiful Snapshots of Bloomsbury: The Private Lives of Virginia Woolf and Vanessa Bell, could probably offer more insights. I recall that Maggie mentioned there were costs involved in publishing the volume.

I'm not sure about any of the details, but these are starting points (and you may already have begun to delve into these sources). I am sure that additional guidance will come from others very soon.

Best,

Dear Woolfians:

I am very happy to report that Hurst, UK, will be publishing my manuscript on Woolf and the Dreadnought hoax—wooo hooo! I am thrilled and thankful to everyone who helped me with this book. And it just may be out in June 2023. Fingers crossed.

I would like to include some images of Woolf and her family and, especially, one or both of the hoaxers Lafayatte studio portraits. While I can get digitized images of both, none of the organizations selling them claims copyright and tells me that I need to find the copyright holder. Has anyone gone through this process with the hoax images? Can you advise me?

As for other Stephen family photos, does anyone have any recommendations of the best places to find our copyright holders and get permissions? There are so many copyright laws in play right now that it all seems a bit of mire.

If possible, I would like to include photographs of Virginia and Leonard as well as Leslie, Julia, Thoby, Vanessa, and Adrian—possibly Laura and the Duckworths…

Thank you all so much for any help you can offer,

Danell
