2014 North Central Aquaculture Conference

The North Central Regional Aquaculture Center and the Aquaculture Associations of Indiana, Michigan, & Ohio are pleased to announce a special presentation at the 2014 North Central Aquaculture Conference in Toledo, OH, February 22-23, 2014 titled “The First Commercial Use of RNA-interference Technology in Production of All-Male Prawns”.  This cutting-edge presentation will be on Saturday, February 22, 2014, 4:00 PM – 4:40 PM and is in addition to the 48 presentations schedules to be given at the Conference, which includes other freshwater prawn and saltwater shrimp presentations.

Culturing both sexes of crustacean populations together results in intense territoriality behaviors, resulting in the expenditure of energy that could otherwise go into growth.  When either males or females are grown separately, these behaviors are reduced, and energy is allocated to growth rather than the reproduction process and associated behaviors.  The end result is faster growth rates and higher average weight of prawns grown in the absence of the opposite sex.  Advancements in the identification of sex differentiating factors in crustaceans makes it feasible for cost-effective, non-GMO production of mono-sex populations of crustaceans, such as freshwater prawns.  This is a must-see presentation for those doing or interested in crustacean aquaculture.
