Ohio State Service-Learning News

The Service-Learning Initiative Has A New Home We have moved to a new office location at 53 W. 11th Ave. This will be our permanent office space moving forward. Our primary office is in room 204. Please feel free to stop by and say hello!

Spring 2013 Course List Now Available The Service-Learning Initiative has completed a list of service-learning courses that will be available to students in Spring 2013. You can view the course list here: http://service-learning.osu.edu/spring-term-2013.html Please feel free to pass it on to friends and colleagues. If you are teaching a service-learning course that is not included, please get in touch with us ASAP!
Designing Service-Learning Workshop On Wednesday, November 28th, we will be hosting "Designing Service-Learning Into Your Course," a joint initiative with UCAT. We will cover the basics of service-learning: discuss what service-learning is, how it works, and the nuts and bolts of a service-learning course. We will also discuss examples of current courses at Ohio State, and tell you how the Service-Learning Initiative can support your efforts. If you would like to attend or know someone else who might, please pass on the event registration page: http://ucat.osu.edu/participate/events-on-teaching

Service-Learning Coffee Hour on Conference Participation On Thursday, November 29th, we will be hosting a Service-Learning Coffee Hour at 9am in the conference room of 53 W. 11th. We will be discussing participating in national service-learning and community engagement conferences, such as IARSLCE and NOSC. We will be inviting Ohio State staff and instructors who attended to share their experiences and discuss why conference participation is beneficial to the work we do. Please RSVP to Harmony Cox at hcox at esue.ohio-state.edu<mailto:hcox at esue.ohio-state.edu>.

Course Spotlight

In order to help service-learning scholars make connections and learn about new projects, we will seek to highlight a new service-learning course in every newsletter. Courses will be shared both here and in the "Spotlight" section on the front page of our website. If you are interested in having your course highlighted, please let Harmony know at hcox at esue.ohio-state.edu<mailto:hcox at esue.ohio-state.edu>.

The Field School in Bluefields The Field School in Bluefields is designed as a continuation of Comparative Studies 5691 (Nicaraguan Ethnography, a service-learning course that will be offered spring semester 2013). Students will compare theory with practice by documenting in film the interactions of traditional cultural production and tourism during Bluefields' Palo de Mayo festival. This festival has, at least since the 1950s, become a symbol of the Afro-Caribbean minority culture in Nicaragua. Students will also develop practical documentation skills: interviewing, photography and videography. Students will work closely with local students at the Bluefields Indian & Caribbean University on the Atlantic coast of Nicaragua. Graduate students are welcome to apply. Applications are due November 15th for all students. For more information, please contact Katey Borland at Borland.19 at osu.edu<mailto:Borland.19 at osu.edu>
