White House Convening on Civic Learning – Watch Live Stream on Jan 10, 2 p.m. EST

The Association for American Colleges and Universities (AAC&U) is pleased to announce its participation in a White House national convening named For Democracy’s Future: Education Reclaims Our Civic Mission. You can view the event through a live stream provided on the White House website (http://www.whitehouse.gov/live) on January 10, 2012, from 2:00 – 6:00 p.m. EST. The event will include presentations by Secretary of Education Arne Duncan, Undersecretary of Education Martha Kanter, AAC&U President Carol Geary Schneider, and others. The event also will mark the release of A Crucible Moment: College Learning and Democracy’s Future, a report and National Call to Action from the National Task Force on Civic Learning and Democratic Engagement. The full text and highlights of the report will be available for downloading January 10 on AAC&U’s website at: www.aacu.org/civic_learning/crucible<http://www.aacu.org/civic_learning/crucible>.
The event also will highlight the new American Commonwealth Partnership, which aims to bring together thousands of universities, colleges, community colleges, schools, and other civic partners to promote civic mission and identity. A fuller discussion of the report and its National Call to Action will also occur at two upcoming Washington, DC, events sponsored by AAC&U—a National Symposium, “Reversing a Civic Recession: What Higher Education Can Do<http://www.aacu.org/meetings/annualmeeting/AM12/symposium.cfm>,” scheduled for January 25, 2012, and AAC&U’s Annual Meeting, “Shared Futures/Difficult Choices: Reclaiming a Democratic Vision for College Learning, Global Engagement, and Success<http://www.aacu.org/meetings/annualmeeting/index.cfm>,” January 25-28, 2012.
