The Concord Review History Camp
The TCR History Camp is an intensive workshop in historical research and writing for secondary students. In each two week session, two experienced instructors will coach students, all working remotely, to compose a first draft of an historical research paper on a topic of their choice.
Instructors work one-on-one with students, coaching them through the research and writing process: formulating productive research questions; finding and making discerning use of primary and secondary sources; taking accurate notes; analyzing evidence, formulating a provisional narrative and testing it with more research; marshaling evidence to support one's position or narrative; puzzling together a narrative structure for one's essay; documenting evidence with University of Chicago-style source citations; writing and rewriting. Space is limited and to find out more please visit this page on our website.
The Concord Review is the only quarterly journal in the world to publish the academic research papers of secondary students. Since 1987 it has published 1,427 history essays from students in 46 states and 43 other countries. TCR was recently featured in a column by Jay Mathews in The Washington Post. |

| The University of Chicago is a leader in the study of history, through its pioneering study of civilizations, its intensive curriculum focused on research and critical thinking, and its excellent training of young historians for careers in law, government, education, public policy, business, and nonprofits. Small seminar classes taught by world-renowned faculty promote individual attention to students, vigorous debates, and the discovery of primary historical texts that cover the globe (Africa, Asia, the Americas, and Europe) and span time (from ancient Greece to the modern day).
As a Chicago history major, you can choose between three paths. The first, the Colloquium track, includes one research colloquium; it is perfect if you need a strong foundation for a business or nonprofit career. The second, our BA Thesis track, includes the colloquium and a thesis, which is an article-length piece of original scholarly writing. The third, the Capstone track, allows you to produce an original research project that does not take the form of a thesis. Capstone projects may be public history installations; oral histories; podcasts; art; works of historical fiction, nonfiction, or graphic novels; engagement with a community; digital projects; data analysis and infographics; genealogical projects, etc.
The study of history will not only enable you to become a consumer of knowledge, it will also prepare you to become a producer of knowledge. Undergraduate history courses first train you to explore large-scale social, cultural, and political processes by defining concrete, researchable questions. Then, you will learn how to locate the primary and secondary sources necessary to posit answers to these large questions. Finally, faculty will assist you in transforming your research into elegant historical arguments that shed light on the multiple ways in which our world, our very reality, has transformed over time.
History is a versatile field that accommodates various perspectives and, in keeping with the University of Chicago tradition, history students incorporate a number of other disciplines into their study. Many students complement their history courses with electives in anthropology, classics, economics, English, languages, law, philosophy, political science, religious studies, and sociology. For decades, the University of Chicago has been a leader in the study of history, pioneering the University of Chicago Readings in Western Civilization series, used by historians worldwide. |

| The Department of History at The Ohio State University offers graduate and undergraduate programs that help shape tomorrow’s academics and educators, as well as future leaders in a wide variety of fields, from business, journalism, non-profit administration, and government to law, military and foreign service, libraries and archives, medicine and public health, economic development, and regional planning, among many others. We serve more undergraduates than any other history department in the Big Ten and are widely recognized across the nation and around the world for faculty teaching, research, and service.  Ohio State’s undergraduate history major is both carefully structured yet highly flexible. Introductory classes present the basic tools of historical study and fundamental narratives while upper-level courses impart more advanced concepts and methodologies and more focused accounts of events. The program culminates with opportunities to apply these skills and knowledge to an individual research project undertaken in small seminar settings.  Our faculty offer a wide array of courses that cover nearly the entire world and every period of history as well as topics such as environmental, women’s, religious, and military and diplomatic history. Our major is designed to allow students to range widely among the courses we offer while at the same time encouraging a focus on a particular region, period, or theme. Students work closely with faculty experts as they pursue their major focus and undertake their research projects or internship experiences. In addition, we provide extensive opportunities to accompany faculty on education abroad programs, such as our popular WWII study tour. Our students have also participated in archaeological digs in Ireland and Greece, and in unique outings in China, Argentina, Israel, and Tanzania.  We invite you to learn more at our Department Homepage and to check us out on Pinterest and YouTube and to follow us on Twitter and Facebook. |
