| Hometown Heroes |

 |

|
| We often recognize and honor figures of national prominence who have made a difference for our country. Yet, there are many individuals in our local communities who have had a sizable influence on our towns, cities, and states. These people are from all different eras and backgrounds: It's the educator who your school is named after who opened it back in the 1800s. It's the World War II veteran who fought for our country and has resided in your town for the past 50 years. It's the past mayor of your city or town who was the driving force behind modernizing where you live. It's the nurse or doctor who has been on the front lines this past year tirelessly doing life-saving work in their field. Hometown Heroes are all around us -- even if sometimes we don't realize it -- and it's time to honor their legacies.
The NHC encourages student members to select a figure (local or state-wide) and examine how that person’s actions helped make a lasting and positive impact on history. We strongly encourage students to look for unique figures who may not be known to the general population.
Entries must be received by April 10, 2021 and submissions are judged by the NHC Advisory Board and winners will be announced at the end of April. Awards: First Place - $1,000, Second Place - $500 (one prize), Third Place - $250 (two prizes) |

| American Association for State and Local History |

| The American Association for State and Local History helps historical societies, history museums, historic sites, and other history-related agencies to thrive. Our individual and institutional members in all 50 states and territories preserve and interpret history. They use local, state, and national history to connect people to a sense of place and to each other, and to help their communities address challenges they face today.
AASLH provides several tools for students and teachers interested in public history work. Our History News magazine, the AASLH blog, and our Affinity Group networks offer insight into what it’s like to work in historical organizations. AASLH’s webinars and online courses are open to anyone and illuminate the skills necessary for volunteers and paid professionals in museums, historical societies, and historical parks. Student memberships ($30) are available. |

| The Department of History at the University of Massachusetts Amherst is dedicated to cultivating students' critical abilities, as well as their skills in core historical methodologies and analytical writing. The department prides itself particularly on its long-standing commitment to transatlantic and global history, gender and labor studies, public history, and American history. Throughout its curriculum and advising, the department emphasizes career and internship preparation. At the same time, it is devoted to the idea that an understanding of the past is essential to participating in a vibrant democracy.
Situated in the intellectually rich, scenic Pioneer Valley, the UMass Amherst Department of History offers students the opportunity to study with a respected faculty engaged in exciting research. The nationally-recognized Public History Program and our Community Engagement programs bring historical scholarship to the teachers and people of the Commonwealth, while the Five College Consortium allows students to draw on the courses and faculties of Amherst College, Smith College, Mount Holyoke College, and Hampshire College, as well as the University itself. In preparing for a variety of careers involving critical thought and communication, UMass Amherst history students work with faculty members in the department as well as the larger UMass and Five College community. | The Indiana University Department of History teaches almost 5000 undergraduates annually in courses about subjects ranging from Ancient Greece to contemporary China. In small seminars and lectures, our students learn directly from a distinguished faculty of 52 professors. In internships, career workshops, and independent research projects, IU History undergraduates prepare for careers in business, law, education, public service, and the arts, among other fields.
IU History offers a thriving graduate program, as well. Each year, hundreds of talented students from across the globe compete for a spot in our doctoral and master’s degree programs, which rank consistently among the nation’s Top 10 among public universities, and Top 25 overall. Their fellow graduate alumni include distinguished scholars teaching in colleges and universities around the world, as well as corporate executives, library and museum leaders, and distinguished public servants ranging from ambassadors to retired cabinet officials.
Established in 1895, the IU Department of History’s faculty today includes winners of Guggenheim, NEH, ACLS, and Fulbright awards, as well as numerous book prizes and teaching honors. The department houses two of the world’s most widely read and prestigious history journals—the American Historical Review and the Journal of American History—as well as other noted journals and research centers.
