Intel International Science and Engineering Fair – New Frontiers in STEM Creativity
More than 1,800 outstanding high school science students, representing 64 countries, exhibited their inventive, groundbreaking projects at the 2021 Intel International Science and Engineering Fair (ISEF), held virtually for the first time ever. Michelle Hua was awarded the top prize for for her discovery of an artificial intelligence-based algorithm used for human action recognition.

Catherine Kim and Daniel Shen each received the second prize: Catherine for creating a novel hierarchical machine learning model that is able to predict adverse drug reactions with 91% accuracy, along with their underlying biological mechanisms, and Daniel for his development of an AI-powered facial-cue control module. Its high speed accelerates scientific discoveries, medicine research, and many other fields driven by large amounts of temporal data. In total, more than $5 million was awarded to the finalists, who were evaluated based on their projects’ creativity, innovation and level of scientific inquiry. Documentary Takes a Deep Dive on Gifted Education
  |

  |

  |

|
| Now in post-production, The G Word is the most comprehensive film ever undertaken on gifted, talented, and neurodiverse education and populations. The film seeks to ask the question: In the 21st century, who gets to be “gifted” in America and why?

The G Word reveals the economic, cultural, and gender diversity of our nation’s gifted and talented population at every stage of life, highlighting their educational challenges, social isolation, deep emotional sensitivities, and complex, neurodiverse brains. It reveals a large and lively community of people working hard to meet the needs of gifted students while challenging the prejudice and trauma that comes with being labeled “smart” in the 21st century. See the G Word's Impact Manifesto and latest blog posts.

The University of Alabama’s Gifted Education and Talent Development Office recently launched a program to better support families of students capable of high levels of achievement. The program will allow students in grades 3-8 to have their academic capabilities assessed virtually to support their talent development and place them in an appropriate academic environment.

Davidson Academy - Online and Reno Campuses

One Unique School. Two Groundbreaking Campuses.

The Davidson Academy offers two educational options specifically designed to meet the needs of profoundly gifted students – an online campus for those living anywhere in the U.S. and Canada and a school on the University of Nevada, Reno campus for local residents. Both options are centered on a rigorous academic environment where students thrive among their intellectual peers. Academy classes are grouped by ability rather than by age, providing profoundly gifted students an educational opportunity matched to their abilities, strengths and interests. |

Measuring Effectiveness in Gifted Education (Blog Talk Radio)

Examining Language as a Tool to Resist the Erasure of Memory and Sense of Self Against Trauma, Marginalization, and Illness

Katherine Vandermel of Closter, N.J. received $25,000 for her Davidson Fellows project, "The Language of Memory: Combating the Erasure of Self-Identity."   |

  |

  |

|
| What kind of impact can your Davidson Fellows project have on society?
Memory gives us both individual and collective identities. Today, we see how memory can be neglected in a culture that has preferred to bulldoze history in favor of the present and future. My project illuminates how language functions as an anti-erasure tool: it spotlights a battle fought by millions with dementia, generational struggles of individuals trying to preserve their experiences, stories, and identities as memories disintegrate. Word by word, as the portfolio works its way through the translation of the Dutch poem, “Het Lied der Achttien dooden”, it demonstrates the resilience of language—through linguistic, cultural, and temporal barriers, memory (and, by extension, identity) persist. In this way, my project holds impact in that it presents a model of how stories survive non-consensual erasure, how a person’s stories survive beyond the confines of a human life or the life of a memory, even in the face of oppression, societal indifference, and illness.

What are some of your short-term and long-term plans?
At university, I plan to continue creating and studying literature across multiple perspectives: particularly, as a writer and historian. As an opera singer, I additionally plan to continue my music training in college and embrace literature from the perspective of song. While my long-term plans remain uncertain, I am currently considering pursuing postgraduate education or a career in journalism, communications, or digital media, among other possibilities.

Please describe your academic setting and some positive experiences with mentors?
As a student at a public magnet school, I’m fortunate to have access to enriching classes. Some of my favorite classes have been IB Language and Literature, and IB History of the Americas. I am a member of the Creative Writing Research Program, where I have time to freely write. This program is run by my mentor, Mr. Richard Weems. In the creative writing program, I’ve been fortunate to receive feedback from Mr. Weems on various portfolio pieces that have constructively allowed me to improve my work. This class time has been highly beneficial for my progress as a writer and artist. |

| “Gifted children are routinely shamed for their inherent abilities. They did not 'choose' to possess a highly active mind, heightened intensities, or a drive for learning that may surpass the academic needs of their peers. As parents, educators, counselors, and legislators, we need to stop the misconceptions, false assumptions, and marginalization of gifted education.”

--Dr. Gail Post, in the blog post, Stop the shaming: Why we must advocate for gifted children now |
