| The recently-released 2018-2019 State of the States in Gifted Education report represents a snapshot of gifted education across the nation. The National Association for Gifted Children (NAGC) and the Council of State Directors of Programs for the Gifted (CSDPG) conducted this survey to explore if and how states provide and support programs for gifted students, including individual states' approaches toward identification, funding, acceleration and more. Themes that emerged included the importance of federal funding, integration into and collaboration with other district/state departments, and initiatives to improve gifted services/programs with a focus on equitable access. Regeneron Science Talent Search - Honoring Scientific Innovation
Some of America's brightest students were recently recognized when the Society for Science & the Public (SSP) and Regeneron announced the winners of the 2021 Regeneron Science Talent Search (STS). The Regeneron STS recognizes 40 high school seniors creating new technologies and solutions that can change the world through scientific innovation.
   - Yunseo Choi won the top award of $250,000 for her project where she played theoretical “match maker” for an infinite number of things or people. She studied matching algorithms that work for a finite number of couples and determined which important properties would still work for an infinite number of pairs.
   - Noah Getz received second place and $175,000 for his research where he adjusted the way computer models identify promising pharmaceutical compounds, which could make the discovery of new drugs faster and less expensive.
   - Eshani Jha received third place and $150,000 for her development of a biochar filtration system that removes microplastics, pharmaceuticals, pesticides and heavy metals from drinking water.

Alyssa Keirn, Davidson Fellow

Developing Technology to Reduce Bacteria that Causes Foodborne Illness

Alyssa Keirn of Fort Collins, Colo. received $25,000 for her Davidson Fellows project, "Solar-Powered Ozone and UVC-Based Decontaminator."   |

  |

  |

|
| What kind of impact can your Davidson Fellows project, “Solar-Powered Ozone and
UVC-Based Decontaminator,” have on society?
Worldwide, 420,000 people die annually from foodborne illnesses. Almost 30% are children
under the age of five. I designed, built, and tested a portable, solar powered device to
decontaminate a variety of bacteria from foods and utensils in areas where access to easy
cleaning methods or electricity is limited. The device reduced various types of bacteria on the surface of potatoes, kale, eggs, and forks by greater than 99%. If implemented, the device could help prevent food-borne illnesses and save lives.

What are some of your short-term and long-term plans?
In the short term, I plan to continue my studies in electrical engineering and computer science at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. I hope to continue exploring other disciplines and learning about the ways interdisciplinary research can help solve the world’s biggest problems. I plan to earn a masters and PhD in electrical engineering and computer science. My dream job involves working in space science and exploration, but I’m also interested in discovering new technologies to address climate change. No matter what the future holds, I am excited to see it!

Please describe your academic setting and some positive experiences with mentors?
Over the course of my science project, I have had several mentors. Dr. Doreene Hyatt and Mr. Pete Justice at Colorado State University’s (CSU) microbiology lab, helped me gain laboratory experience and knowledge working with microbes. They taught me things I would never have learned on my own. They took a chance on an excited middle school student and continued with me through high school as I built upon and expanded my project. I also worked in CSU’s Zadrozny Lab. My mentors there, Ms. Cassidy Jackson and Dr. Joe Zadrozny, gave me new and exciting ideas and access to chemistry equipment that I never would have been able to use otherwise. My experiences in CSU’s labs gave me the love for research that I have today. |

| “Knowledge about talent development suggests that gifted children thrive when given the opportunity to explore their curiosity at a pace that works for them. Accelerated coursework and enrichment programs are critical to the success of such students . . . It’s a myth that gifted children would thrive no matter what their learning environment.”

--Camilla Benbow, Dean of Education and Human Development at Vanderbilt University's Peabody College |
