| Making Meaning of May 4 |

| The Kent State shootings are recognized for changing public opinion about the Vietnam War; setting precedent in the US Supreme Court; changing National Guard armament policy; helping lower the voting age to 18; and reminding us all to practice and protect the First Amendment. 
Middle and high school educators, apply now for Making Meaning of May 4, a National Endowment for the Humanities Landmarks of American History & Culture workshop offered remotely summer 2021 by Kent State University. Engage virtually with the country’s most knowledgeable May 4 scholar-educators to develop a lesson plan for your students—all disciplines welcome. Workshop faculty include witnesses to the shootings, surviving casualties of the shootings, K–12 experts, and experts on movements of the 1960s. You’ll also learn how to access 50,000 digital resources in the May 4 Collection to use with your students for inquiry-based explorations. Graduate credit and contact hour options are available. Apply by March 1, 2021! |

| We are a community of scholars and students passionate about studying the past in order to help us understand our contemporary world. In the History Department, Rice students learn with accomplished scholars in small classroom settings. Our faculty enjoy teaching, and many have been recognized with awards for exceptional teaching. The skills learned in history courses--how to sift through enormous amounts of information, how to read texts critically, how to write effective prose--are broadly applicable to many fields and careers.
Students who love history and who want the freedom to explore the past widely should consider majoring in history. Gifts to the department from alumni and friends offer history majors opportunities for travel and research. An honors program allows students to conduct original research and to write a thesis.
The graduate program accepts exceptionally motivated students who are interested in studying the history of the American South, the Atlantic World, Latin American History, the Middle East, Trans-national Asia, and the U.S. and the World. The unique dual degree program with the Universidade Estadual de Campinas (UNICAMP) allows students fluent in Portuguese the opportunity to study in Brazil and to earn a second Ph.D. Graduate students fluent in Spanish can earn the same dual degree with our Mexico program with the Instituto Mora. | The study of History at the University of Wyoming provides students with the tools to comprehend the present in order to prepare for the future. Challenging courses are designed to facilitate critical thinking and the development of analytical skills. Each of our courses features the discussion of complex issues, the development of writing and reading skills, and is generally oriented toward promoting individual enrichment. The professional skills that the History program instills transcend our field and allow students to work toward a variety of career choices such as business, law, government service, public history, archives and museum work, education, management, writing, and graduate studies.
The ability to develop perspective, render informed judgments, and function as productive citizens of the global community stand as hallmarks of our program. Students in History at the University of Wyoming have rich opportunities to conduct internships, study abroad, and pursue original archival research. We offer small class sizes, close interaction with faculty, and an active lecture series that gives students exposure to national and international scholars in the field. We have an active chapter of Phi Alpha Theta, the History honors society, which organizes events and supports original research. The degree in History at the University of Wyoming offers students the opportunity for intellectual growth and rigorous study within a vibrant community of scholars. |
