| National History Club Spring Newsletter! |

| Despite the challenges of the past two months, we are happy to share with you our Spring Newsletter, the final for this school year that highlights the latest happenings from history clubs throughout the United States! Our front-page article is written by Laura Davis, a Professor at Kent State University who as a freshman at the college witnessed the shootings by the Ohio National Guard of students protesting the Vietnam War. In addition to this article, we also highlight our spring award programs: the 16th annual "History Student of the Year" award, the 7th annual Lessons of Leadership contest, the National History Scholars Society, and more! |

"History Student of the Year" Award

This Spring the NHC and George Washington's Mount Vernon co-sponsored for the 16th consecutive year the "History Student of the Year" prize. Each chapter chose a recipient for this award, and s/he received an autographed copy of a history book. The book prize this year was an autographed copy of "Revolution Song: A Story of American Freedom" by Russell Shorto.

Lessons of Leadership Contest
For the 7th straight year, the NHC and The HBE Foundation invited students to select an elected official and describe how that person risked their career with a decision (passing a law, making a speech, running for office, etc.) that was at odds with public opinion. Congratulations to all winners, including Daniel Baur, whose essay "Ralph Carr: A Lone Voice in Defense of a Hated Minority" took first prize.
