Dear Colleagues:

Next week, starting on February 4, Dr. Randy Lange, the Talent Development Services Program Coordinator in LaGrange (Illinois) School District 102, and adjunct instructor with the University of Iowa, will offer the fully-online class, EPLS:4110:0EXW Administrative and Policy Issues in Gifted Education (two-semester-hours that apply to the Administrative strand required for the State of Iowa Talented and Gifted [TAG] Endorsement). The information, however, isn't limited to Iowa!

The course description suggests that this class focuses on "policy, administrative, evaluation issues in developing and maintaining gifted programs in a school setting; participants develop gifted program and policies for a school; for school executives and coordinators of gifted programs." The class is an important option for the endorsement because teachers with endorsements may be the only one in the building who understand important administrative and policy issues related to their programs.

Dr. Lange noted: "The course is designed to provide a solid foundation of what a defensible gifted and talented should be. While it 'covers all the bases,' you will also be guided by a coach who developed a program for a suburban school district and is currently working in a school district. Participants will acquire an in-depth knowledge base so you can make informed decisions related to the inner workings of a gifted and talented program."

The primary audience for this class would be teachers earning their endorsements in gifted education-or teachers who know their district would benefit from this content. This course is also ideal for those interested in educational leadership, including Pre-K - 12 Administration. Parents who are actively involved as stakeholders in their local gifted programs would find the content both interesting and useful.

For those who have never enrolled in a UI class before, registration is through Distance and Online Education (DOE) as a "Distance Education Nondegree Student." All the information you need is available here: belinblank.org/educators/reg<https://belinblank.education.uiowa.edu/educators/endorsement/#how-to-apply>. Regardless of previous degrees, if you don't need graduate credit for this class, you may register as an undergraduate through DOE; undergraduate tuition is $337 compared to the current graduate tuition rate of $560 / semester hour.
