Defying the Nazis: The Sharps' War
Written by Artemis Joukowsky
Foreword by Ken Burns
Official companion to the Ken Burns film which premiered September 20, 2016 on PBS tells the little-known story of the Sharps, an otherwise ordinary couple whose faith and commitment to social justice inspired them to undertake dangerous rescue and relief missions across war-torn Europe, saving the lives of countless refugees, political dissidents, and Jews on the eve of World War II.

Rice University
The History Department offers one of the most popular undergraduate majors at Rice University-and also one of the most challenging. Our faculty offers outstanding geographical coverage of Asia and the Middle East, Latin America and the Caribbean, and Africa, in addition to Europe, the United States, and the Atlantic World. At least six of our faculty research primarily in periods before 1700, ranging from the Byzantine Empire to southern Africa to South Asia. Eight of our faculty have won prestigious prizes from Rice University or national organizations for their outstanding teaching and mentoring; every single one of our faculty score highly on Rice's student evaluations.
Students selected to write an honors thesis, as well as a wide range of other undergraduates, have access to generous funding for research around the country and even internationally. We seek to support international travel for our students wherever possible; recent destinations of our students include China, Brazil, France, the Netherlands, and Zambia. Each year, the department celebrates with its majors and award winners at our Senior Champagne Toast. Our majors go on to wide range of careers. Medicine, law, the study of history at the graduate level, and secondary school teaching are strongly represented; they have also made careers in print and television journalism, consulting, and small business, among many other fields.

Lessons of Leadership Contest
Throughout history leaders and famous individuals have often inspired us with their words. The NHC and The HBE Foundation present the 4th annual Lessons of Leadership Contest, which invites members of the NHC to select a quote from a historical figure and examine how that person's actions validated his/her words and helped make an impact on history. Contest entries can be submitted in any three of the following formats:
* An essay of not more than 2,000 words, supplemented with a thorough bibliography and endnotes.
* A documentary that reflects your ability to communicate your figure's importance, and also helps you develop skills in using photographs, video, graphic presentations, etc.
* A website that reflects your ability to use website design software and computer technology to communicate how your historical figure influenced history.
All entries must be received by April 1, 2017 and cash prizes for the five top submissions total $5,000!

From 2009 through 2015, our full-time faculty have written twenty-nine books and edited six volumes, published forty-seven articles in peer-reviewed journals and contributed fifty-nine chapters to anthologies and major handbooks.
Our 300+ undergraduate majors shine as well, competing successfully every year for university and external prizes and grants, and going on to prestigious graduate programs such as: University of Chicago, Princeton University, University of Washington, Vanderbilt University, and other schools in the United States and around the world.
The History Department at Temple is the proud home of very active research centers that support graduate students, sponsor conferences, and interact continuously with academic and non-academic communities in Philadelphia and around the world. Our Center for Public History trains students for work beyond the university-from museums and archives to the halls of government-and to be particularly mindful of community, collaborative practice, and the fraught politics of shared memory. The Center supports research and socially engaged projects with community partners, winning external grants, national attention, and awards. The MA program with concentration in public history enjoys a remarkable 100% placement rate for graduates who find careers in national and regional cultural organizations.
