[Ohiogift] Skipping a grade

We had a case here which was agonizing. Younger brother (FS 145+) needed whole-grade and the older sibling was in the next grade level. We ended up subject accelerating the young child in reading and math. The students are now in high school and all is good. We now have another similar situation in one of our elementary schools. Kindergarten student with a WPPSI of FS 150. Older sibling in the next grade level; high, but not nearly as high. We are looking at subject acceleration for both and we have the documentation to support it.

I was always told, don't accelerate a sibling into the next grade level where there is a sibling because it will change the family dynamics forever.

Karen is absolutely correct in regards to the Iowa Acceleration Scale and the change that will occur within the family. There definitely will be issues that will come about as a result of something so dramatic. However, respectfully, I must disagree with the last statement. I once played a role in a very successful similar acceleration. Prior to this experience, I would have made the exact same statement.

Just know that each situation and family dynamic is going to be different. All factors and possibilities must be considered, even for the sibling that is not accelerated. Should a child be left stagnant just because another member of their family learns at a different pace?

Food for thought.

Respectfully,

Accelerating a sibling into the same grade as an older sibling is a huge issue and a critical item on the Iowa Acceleration Scale. It changes the family dynamics forever. Do not do it unless both are accelerated.

Hi I am new to this group. I have a 3rd grader who has been doing subject acceleration, but logistically skipping a grade seems to be a better option at this point. I am concerned about the developmental piece when he hits higher grades. I am also concerned because he will be in the same grade as his older brother who is also extremely bright. I would love any insight or advice anyone might have from their experiences
Thank you
