ACLS Humanities E-Book (HEB)
Interested in archaeology or ancient Roman history? Then you'll want to check out ACLS Humanities E-Book's recent release of Oplontis Villa A ("of Poppaea") at Torre Annunziata, Italy, Volume 1: The Ancient Setting and Modern Rediscovery, edited by John R. Clarke and Nayla K. Muntasser. This is the first of four volumes devoted to the archaeological discoveries made at the Villa A site at Oplontis (Torre Annunziata, Italy). The Oplontis Project is an initiative operating under the direction of Clarke and Michael L. Thomas of the University of Texas at Austin, in collaboration with the Soprintendenza Speciale per i Beni Archeologici per Pompei, Ercolano e Stabia, as well as an international team of scholars.

In this first volume topics covered range from architecture to geology to ancient flora and fauna of the region, as well as an overview of on-site discoveries in chronological order from the end of the sixteenth century through the present.

Humanities E-Book (HEB), an online collection of 4,680 books selected by scholars and participating learned societies of the American Council of Learned Societies, is available only on a subscription basis. However, the HEB collection does include a small number of open-access titles, of which Oplontis Villa A is one. And HEB was recently chosen to participate in the Humanities Open Book Initiative, a program intended to give a second life to outstanding out-of-print books in the humanities by turning them into free e-books. Fifteen books will be selected for their enduring scholarly value and potential public interest and will be converted into open-access e-books.

Harvard University

History is the study of the past. It encompasses every dimension of human interaction, including social life, the economy, culture, thought, and politics.

At Harvard University, The History Undergraduate program offers a primary concentration in History or allows students to pursue a joint degree with concentrations such as Ancient History, East Asian History, and Near Eastern History. Students study subjects from every imaginable perspective employing all the techniques of the humanities and social sciences to raise questions and probe for answers. Our alumni have gone on to careers in History, Education, Law, Public Policy, Politics, and Business.

For the students wishing to pursuit academic careers at universities and colleges in the United States and abroad, the Harvard History PhD offers the opportunity to train as skilled scholars and conscientious teachers. This program begins after undergraduate work has been completed, and continues all the way through to the Dissertation, typically taking 6 to 8 years to complete. Students may take courses offered by other departments in the Faculty of Arts & Sciences, and in coordination with Harvard Law School, may also pursue both a PhD in history and a JD at the Law School.

Harvard boasts small class sizes (with a median of 12 people per class), has world-class laboratories, 80 libraries with over 15 million volumes, dozens of museums and research centers, cutting-edge research and funding opportunities.

Written by Chris Kientz & Steve Hockensmith

Illustrated by Lee Nielsen

Smithsonian Books | Trade Paperback | 978-1-588-34541-7 | 64 pages | $10.95

Four schoolmates are excited about a field trip to the Smithsonian's National Air and Space Museum. When they get there, however, they find a very different museum than the one they were expecting. Not only is it much smaller, it's filled with balloons, blimps, and dirigibles, many of them with the same logo: BARRIS AIRSHIPS. Where's the Spirit of St. Louis? Where's the Apollo 11 command module? Where's the Wright Brothers' 1903 flyer? With the help of a museum "fabrications specialist," they travel through time to try and restore the Wright brothers to their well-earned place in history. Along the way they also learn about aerodynamics and other aviation principles from a wise-cracking A.I. named Smitty.

Fascinated by the past? Want to shape the future? Tulane University's Department of History will provide you with tools for incisive analysis, critical inquiry, and persuasive communication. Many of our undergraduate students go on to careers in law, politics, journalism, filmmaking, public advocacy, teaching, and academics. Our graduate students pursue careers as educators, writers, and public historians. With over twenty faculty members, our Department is one of the largest in the School of Liberal Arts. Our faculty are internationally recognized scholars and teachers who are committed to the highest caliber of research and publishing while maintaining engagement with students and excellence in teaching. Our program offers a wide variety of lecture courses and seminars in the history of Africa, the Ancient World, Asia, Europe, Latin America, the Middle East, and the United States, along with thematic courses that cross disciplinary boundaries.

Our undergraduate program is innovative and focused on our students' needs. Several times each semester, the Department hosts evening "History in the News" forums, where faculty meet with history majors to contextualize current events historically. In addition to the archival collections housed throughout New Orleans, history students have opportunities to draw from the archives and libraries located on Tulane University's campus, which include records of slavery, jazz, architecture, women, and LGBT communities. Since Hurricane Katrina, our students have coupled their study of history with the University's effort to engage students with service learning in the city. History students can work in local museums and archives, on digital history projects, and tutor in local public schools. Our new "Freshman Experience in History" offers innovative team-taught lecture courses on topics such as the history of disasters, the history of food and drink, and freshman seminars on New Orleans.

We welcome your visit to Tulane University. Visiting campus is the best way to learn what it is like to be a part of the Tulane community. Visiting also gives you the chance to experience New Orleans, one of the most culturally rich and distinctive cities in the United States. We are located across the street from Audubon Park, 400 acres that encompass tennis courts, golf courses, jogging and bicycle paths, horse stables, the Audubon Zoo and some of the most magnificent live oaks you'll ever see.
