[Ohiogift] Article on the new Jack Kent Cooke report

I would love to hear from other gifted educators in rural districts. I think low-income students in rural areas have limited opportunities & few mentors, particularly at the elementary/middle school levels where the foundation is laid. PSEO, dual-enrollment, & now CC+ create options for high school kids, but we could have an increase in those participation numbers, if more was done in the earlier grades...starting in pre-school/kindergarten.

"I will spend no time on the argument that special treatment of the academically gifted is elitist. It has no moral standing. A special ability is a child's most precious asset. When it comes to athletic and musical ability, no one considers withholding training that could realize those gifts. It is just as senseless, and as ethically warped, to withhold training that can realize academic ability." Charles Murray, REAL EDUCATION, p.146

“Athletics are performed publicly. Good academics are a secret.’’

B- is the highest grade in the country. I'm proud of our work on the report card measures, but we still have so far to go in this state, particularly with minority and economically disadvantaged students. We are measuring, but we aren't holding districts nearly accountable enough.

Ann,

Shocked that it is that high or that low? When one looks at the criteria to get the grade we look pretty good. The things we have are due do the constant effort of OAGC under your leadership. Still a B- is sad and we have so many students who need support. I do worry most for students in poverty. Even if they show early promise we let them down.
