I see this as a glass-half-full situation.  The other side of the coin is that New York schools have been overwhelmed by families with gifted students who want to enroll their children in public schools and that they been trying to expand and tweak programs to meet the demand.  

In so many other places, public school gifted programs are languishing or being cancelled completely and families with gifted children are spending all their energy trying to find alternatives to public school.
 
Let's all hope that every school in NY is able to reopen soon!
