Hello, everyone:  First and foremost, I wish you, your families, friends, and colleagues safety and good health during these truly unprecedented times we find ourselves trying to navigate.  The COVID-19 pandemic continues to take a toll on everyone’s personal and professional lives and for many of us that means working remotely which presents a whole new suite of challenges.  I am still trying to get used to the fact that my kitchen table is my office for the time being.  Overall stress no matter where you are or what you are doing is at an unprecedented level and finding a sense of balance is nothing short of difficult.  Given that, I want to sincerely thank all MWBWG members for your continued time and dedication to our organization.  Having to cancel the 2020 meeting was truly disappointing but you can still remain involved on-line and more important, you can make your voice be heard by casting your MWBWG Committee vote.

I would like to urge all paid MWBWG members to please take a few minutes to respond to the FINAL email reminder pertaining to (soon to be vacant) Board of Director positions.  SEE EMAIL AND LINK BELOW.  If for some reason you did not receive this email, or have any questions, please contact both myself and Brianne Walters and we will be happy to help.  As I stated earlier this year, in order for MWBWG to continue both its conservation mission and expand its base, it is crucial that everyone review this year’s nominees and choose those candidates they feel best represent the group as a whole.  Truly, the foundation and success of any professional organization cannot remain in the hands of the same individuals over and over.  We are all tremendously busy with our professional careers (and now COVID-19), but the work must be shared and evenly distributed, otherwise institutional “burnout” is inevitable.

Voting is open to all paid members and must be completed by midnight EST on April 4, 2020. For the first time, voting will be through Easypolls. Please choose seven (7) board members and one (1) student member by checking the box then hit “vote” once you are finished.  You can only vote once.

The results will be tallied by the Nominations and Elections Committee, communicated to the current Board of Directors on the morning of the first day of the Annual Meeting, and then announced to the members of the MWBWG. Newly elected Directors are expected to join the incumbent Directors at a brief Board Meeting at the end of the Annual Meeting, at which the new members assume their duties and begin a 2-year term. Officers (President, Vice President, Secretary, and Treasurer) are chosen from the 11-person Board and elected by simple majority of the Directors.
This year, in 2020, we will be electing a student member of the Board to fill the position of Maria Monarchino, whose 2-year term expires. In addition, the terms as regular members of the Board are expiring for Catton, Heeringa, Johnson, Karsk, Kurta, Powers, and Tichenell, so we need to fill these seven positions as well.
The by-laws were formulated so that each person on the 12-member Board would serve a 2-year term and that six members would be elected each year. Unfortunately, starting in 2014, errors occurred concerning the length of the terms served by various individuals who replaced members who did not complete his/her term. Hence we have eight, not six, members of the Board up for election in 2020. To correct this imbalance, we propose to elect the student representative and five regular members to a standard 2-year term in 2020. The remaining two positions as regular member of the Board will be filled for 1 year only, to bring us back to six vacant positions every year, starting in 2021.Hence, this year, in 2020, the five regular members receiving the most votes will be elected to a full 2-year term, whereas the 6th and 7th place nominees will serve a 1-year term.
