MS assistantship – NABat Monitoring and Bat Habitat Distribution Modeling

Description:

We are seeking an ambitious MS student to undertake a research project focused on acoustic monitoring of bats in South Carolina. The student will be based out of Clemson University and work in collaboration with Dr. Susan Loeb, U.S. Forest Service, Southern Research Station, Dr. David Jachowski, Clemson University, and the South Carolina Department of Natural Resources. The student will be responsible for continuing ongoing North American Bat Monitoring Program (NABat) surveys in South Carolina to evaluate bat habitat associations at various spatial scales. The student will be expected to 1) interact with state and federal agency personnel as well as volunteers in monitoring bat species in the field, 2) conduct stationary point and mobile acoustic surveys using Anabat detectors across the state during May through July 2019 and 2020, 3) spend considerable time analyzing and managing bat acoustical files, 4) conduct habitat evaluations at stationary point locations, and 5) develop spatial distribution models from the resulting data. Additional potential avenues of research into community ecology, acoustical identification methods, or sampling protocols are also possible.

Qualifications:

Preference will be given to applicants with (1) a BS degree in wildlife biology, ecology, zoology or related discipline, (2) strong record of academic excellence, (3) previous experience in bat-related research (particularly related to acoustic detectors), (4) knowledge of basic statistical and GIS skills, and (6) strong written and oral communication skills.

A 2.5 year graduate assistantship will be provided, which includes an annual stipend and a tuition waiver. The candidate will be expected to start January 7, 2019.

To apply, please send a single pdf containing (1) a cover letter outlining your interests, experience, and contact information, (2) a resume or CV, (3) GRE scores, (4) undergraduate transcripts, and (5) contact information for 3 references to Dr. Susan Loeb (sloeb at clemson.edu<mailto:sloeb at clemson.edu>). Deadline for application submittal is October 11.
