Position Announcement: Master of Science Candidates (2 positions) – Indiana Bat Maternity Colony Response to Forest Habitat Management.
Position(s) Start Date: January 2018.
Closing Date for Applications: October 30, 2017
We are recruiting for 2 skilled and enthusiastic applicants to pursue a Master of Science in Natural Resources, emphasis in Fisheries and Wildlife Sciences at University of Missouri (UMC), Columbia, Missouri. These positions are for a long-term research study evaluating the effects of forest management on Indiana bat populations in Missouri. Both candidates will work on all aspects of the study but their personal research focus will be different. The first candidate will work on an aspect of the study that evaluates Indiana bat population data based on landscape and site factors for 6 management areas that are part of this long-term study. The second candidate will focus on validating physiological reference ranges of health and fitness parameters for adult Indiana bats.
These positions will be based in Dr. Amelon's research group at UMC and US Forest Service Northern Research Station (USFS-NRS). The students will work with Dr. Amelon (NRS and UMC), Dr. Joanna Whittier (UMC) and Dr. Kathryn Womack, (MDC) as well as other collaborators within both agencies and at UMC. The research will include validating new methodology, as well as tailoring existing methodologies to address bat specific challenges of quantifying habitat suitability, and individual bat as well as maternity colony fitness associated with MDC forest management activities. Both positions will include experience with field and laboratory based data collection and analysis, preparation of manuscripts for submission to peer-reviewed journals and experience as a member of a larger research team.
Applicants must demonstrate a strong commitment to wildlife conservation, strong communication skills, leadership skills including problem solving, and work independently and as part of a team.
Minimum Qualifications (Required for either position): 1) Bachelor’s degree in wildlife science, biology, ecology or related field; 2) Competitive GPA (typically > 3.0; > 3.2 preferred) and GRE scores; 3) Applicants must have handling experience with bats (preferably an active USFWS permit for endangered and threatened species, be a sub-permittee, or current experience to apply for a federal permit); 4) Strong written and oral communications skills; 5) Willing and able to live and collect data in remote locations (summers); 6) Ability to work long hours and in adverse conditions.

Position 1: 1) Experience with radio-telemetry and wildlife survey techniques; 2) Familiarity with ArcGIS technology; 3) Knowledge of population modeling.
Position 2: 1) Experience in lab bench work, molecular ecology/population genetics, and/or bioinformatics; 2) Experience extracting compounds from tissue and biological fluids; 3) Knowledge of population modeling.
Application Directions: Applications must be submitted to amelons at missouri.edu<mailto:amelons at missouri.edu> and must include: 1) a letter of intent (specify which position – 1, 2 or either), 2) a complete CV, 3) the names and contact information of at least three individuals who have agreed to provide a personal and professional recommendation if requested , 4) unofficial copies of your college transcripts and GRE scores, 5) copy of Federal permit if relevant.
