White-Nose syndrome: Since 2006, a newly discovered fungal disease referred to as white-nose syndrome has killed millions of North American bats. U.S. Forest Service researchers, along with researchers from other Federal and state agencies and universities have been investigating the fungus and its devastating effects on bats since the disease was first noticed. White-Nose Syndrome in Bats: An Overview of Current Knowledge for Land Managers<http://www.treesearch.fs.fed.us/pubs/45305> prepared by Roger Perry, a research wildlife biologist with the Forest Service, summarizes recent research findings. While no cure has been found the publication discusses ways we can help stop the spread of the disease.

Here are the take homes for managers:

1) Protect and reduce disturbances at winter hibernation and summer roost sites.

2) Follow WNS decontamination protocol when entering caves or mines.

3) Provide optimal foraging and summer roosting habitat.

4) Monitor bats, and report bats showing symptoms of WNS.
