Determination of Range and Potential Habitat for Cave-Dwelling Bat Species in North Georgia

The University of Georgia, Warnell School of Forestry and Natural Resources (http://warnell.uga.edu/) is offering a Ph.D. position beginning in the fall of 2014.  The position will focus on determining and refining ranges, and identifying potential for habitat of cave-dwelling bats in northern Georgia.  The project will be focused on the Indiana bat (Myotis sodalis) and northern long-eared bat (Myotis septentrionalis).  Field work will include mist netting and harp trapping, radio-tagging and tracking, and habitat characterization.  Spatial modeling based on species location data will be conducted to refine ranges and identify potential habitat.  The student will be expected to work independently in the field and supervise project technicians.

Qualifications: Applicants must have extensive experience capturing, handling, and identifying bats of the eastern U.S. with a strong emphasis on bats in the genus Myotis.  Preference will be given to individuals that have experience with radio-telemetry, ArcGIS and Spatial Analysis, GPS, Word, Excel, and R.  An M.S. in wildlife ecology, conservation biology or closely related field is required.  Only individuals with a minimum GPA of 3.5 on all graduate coursework and minimum GRE scores of 160 and 148 on the verbal and quantitative portions, respectively, will be considered.  A valid driver's license is required.  Applicants should be in good physical condition and able to work at night and in hot, humid field conditions where encounters with snakes, biting insects, etc. are possible.  Applicants must have received rabies pre-exposure prophylaxis and have proof of adequate titer.

Duration: The successful applicant will begin classes fall semester 2014 and will begin field work in spring 2015.  The project is funded for 4 years.

Compensation: Research assistantship is funded at $18,609/year (0.40 FTE) with a full tuition waiver.
