Subject: White-nose syndrome detected in Wisconsin

We are writing with unfortunate news.  The presence of the bat disease white-nose syndrome (WNS) was recently confirmed in Wisconsin.  On March 28th the disease was detected in a single mine in Grant County by  WDNR and USGS staff conducting WNS field research and routine WNS surveillance. The presence of the disease was later confirmed by the USGS National Wildlife Health Center.

Many of you have devoted your evenings to monitoring bats in Wisconsin. For that, we thank you. This determination has greatly expanded our knowledge on where certain species occur and in what numbers. WNS shouldn’t discourage these efforts, but rather reinforce the need to continue bat monitoring in Wisconsin. The results of your efforts will allow us to identify important bat conservation areas and to effectively monitor the overall health of the bat population in Wisconsin.
