MWBWG - Mailing List ----------------------------------------
Title: Bat Acoustic Survey Field Technician
Classification: Student/Casual Employee
Agency: Stephen F. Austin State University
Position Description: Three temporary/seasonal technicians are needed to assist with a master's project studying bat occurrence relative to silvicultural treatments intended to yield desired forest conditions for wildlife in bottomland hardwood forests on Wildlife Management Areas and National Wildlife Refuges within the Mississippi Alluvial Valley of the south central US.
We will be surveying for bats in bottomland hardwood forests using acoustic recording devices. Insect trapping and vegetation surveys will be performed to assess conditions in the forest.
Locations: Field sites are located on various US Fish and Wildlife Service National Wildlife Refuges and State Wildlife Management Areas in Northern Louisiana, Northern Mississippi, and Southern Arkansas.
Duties: Field crews will work as 2 independent teams. Crews will be responsible for deploying acoustic recording devices at specified locations (which involves navigating through the forest using GPS), trapping insects and preserving them (using a standardized protocol), collecting data on forest conditions, and retrieving acoustic devices.
Field work will require techs to hike long distances through dense vegetation which may involve avoiding venomous snakes/alligators/poison ivy/thorny vines/mud holes etc. High humidity, high heat, inclement weather, tree falls, mosquitoes, chiggers, ticks, and dehydration will be hazards in the field.
Crews will move between NWRs and WMAs on a set schedule. Crews will remain in the field throughout the summer. Techs will be required to work long, non-traditional hours (including nights and weekends). Days off will be scheduled, however they may not be the same days each week or back-to-back.
Housing/Transportation/Gear: Housing is provided in temporary/seasonal housing. Transportation is provided by project vehicles. Techs will be required to obtain Department of the Interior - USGS defensive driving training (online) prior to season start.
Qualifications: US citizenship, a current state drivers' license (in good standing), and GPS navigational skills are required. Current students or graduates are encouraged to apply. Preference will be given to those who have experience performing acoustic surveys, trapping insects, and/or conducting forest vegetation surveys.
Training: This study will provide training and experience in bat acoustic sampling, insect trapping, and vegetation surveys.
