Project Title: Bats and wind development in northern Arizona

AVAILABLE SUMMER 2014

Starting Date: July 2014
Opening: PhD Assistantship (GRA)
Responsibilities: The GRA will participate in a study of bat activity in northern Arizona, involving acoustic detection, mist netting, and habitat selection. Focus of the study is to conduct a risk analysis of wind facility development to bats in northern Arizona by identifying areas of high risk to bats using acoustic, capture, and radio telemetry. With these methods we will identify migration patterns and routes, characterize the bat community, and locate key roost sites. Specifically the student will: (1) describe the bat assemblage by season for common topographic positions and dominant vegetation types and across northern Arizona, (2) identify sensitive or high use roost locations that increase risk to bats, and (3) develop a risk assessment for future wind energy planning efforts. This project may also involve genetic analysis of some species of bats.
Qualifications: Required: Master of Science degree (completed) in Forestry, Wildlife, or related discipline. Ability to work well with other crewmembers in remote areas for long periods of time. Must be able to function on irregular schedule including day and night hours. Must be prepared to carry heavy field equipment over rough terrain. Camping may be required. Must have valid driver's license.
Desirable: Experience identifying, mist netting and/or handling bats, rabies pre-exposure shots, familiarity with acoustic detectors and identification of bat calls to species when possible, familiarity with bats of Arizona. Experience with landscape-level spatial analyses in GIS, genetic analysis, and quantitative methods, including habitat modeling and demographic parameter estimation. Ability to operate 4WD vehicle safely.
Employment
Conditions: GRA stipend, $19,950 per year and health insurance
