[Natfinwellness] Socioeconomic class issues & Financial literacy: together or separate?

Hi Courtney,

There is some great work being done at Portland Community College to create a nine-month, intensive financial literacy program for socioeconomically disadvantaged students. It tackles how to meet basic needs at a lower income level and how to expand the cognitive horizon so that students can begin to look forward and plan for the future – something that is very hard to do when you have always lived day-to-day. Michele Cruse, the TRIO director, and Elijah Herr, the Asst Director of Financial Aid, created this program and are launching it this fall. Our campus's fin lit committee has been struggling with how to define our mission and goals, in particular regarding how issues of class and background intertwine with financial wellness and education. Do any of your campuses tackle these subjects together and if so, how?

If your fin lit programming doesn't cover issues of class or socioeconomic background, do you currently have other campus programming that does cover it? (Not just broad diversity or specific to racial/gender diversity, but really specific to socioeconomic class).
