[Natfinwellness] Natfinwellness Digest, Vol 12, Issue 25

Hi all,

Cornell is offering 2 types of non-mandatory workshops - a series focused on graduate students (though undergrads are also invited) that usually has between 30-120 attendees, and 2 weekly drop-in hours focused on serving undergrads.

For the grad-focused series, we have tried a few different presenters. We have engaged with the retirement vendors who serve Cornell, and their reps, while not student-focused, have been willing to provide educational sessions on saving and investing for the future. We serve pizza lunch at these sessions.

The undergrad drop-in hours are in 2 different locations - one in our office of academic diversity initiatives (McNair scholars, NYS opportunity programs, Trio programs), and one in our first-year resource center. The academic diversity initiatives has more students attending because their counselors refer students to me to discuss things like living off campus, student employment, becoming an RA, etc. I have very low attendance, but I'm getting students every week, so I'll likely continue in this location.

Hello,
We used to have only non-mandatory workshops and the numbers were dismal at best. But since the President has mandated that any student receiving institutional funds are required to attend at least 7 sessions, the numbers have greatly increased. Before, we offered food, giveaways, and even had the sessions at different times of the day and night and even In the dorms and they just would not show up.
Now that they are mandated, students have to show up and sign in. They are actually participating in the session and seed to be surprised of what they learn.

Thanks,

Hello Everyone,

This question is for those of you that have or are implementing non-mandatory workshops. What is the average number of students that usually attend each workshop? Also, do you offer any incentive(s) and if so, what are the incentive(s)?

Thank you,
Jordee R Justice
